The patron saint of Cesinali: faith, food festivals, and concerts in the heart of Irpinia
In Cesinali, a town of just over two thousand inhabitants overlooking the Sabato Valley in the Province of Avellino, August has always been the month of Saint Roch of Montpellier, the town's patron saint. The Patronal Festival is not just a single evening; it is a long calendar that blends liturgy, popular tradition, gastronomy, and music, involving the entire community along with the many Cesinali natives who return to Irpinia specifically for the occasion. In Campania, devotion to Saint Roch—historically invoked against epidemics—is deeply rooted; in Cesinali, it translates into a collective ritual that fills the town streets for weeks.
The devotional heart of the festival follows a pattern passed down through generations. It opens with the raising of the banner (alzata del pannetto), the hoisting and blessing of the saint's effigy on the churchyard of the San Rocco church, a gesture that officially kicks off the festivities. This is followed by the days of the novena, with rosary recitations and evening masses, leading up to August 16th, the saint's liturgical day, celebrated with a floral tribute and a solemn mass. On the following weekend, the statue of Saint Roch travels through the town streets in a solemn procession: it is the most anticipated and well-attended moment of the entire Cesinali summer, accompanied by a marching band and fireworks. The festivities conclude with a thanksgiving mass.
Alongside the rites, the Saint Roch Festival Committee builds a secular program each year that is intentionally popular and suitable for all ages, which in recent years has included:
The artistic illuminations decorating the historic center complete the atmosphere: in Cesinali, the lighting has been entrusted for years to specialized craftsmen, and the light architectures are among the most photographed elements of the festival.
Among the secular events, the Cecatielli, Cicci, and Pork Festival stands out, which reached its forty-first edition in 2024: a figure that speaks volumes about how deeply rooted it is. Cecatielli are a fresh, handmade pasta typical of the Campania hinterland, cicci are traditional peasant legumes, and pork—grilled or stewed—completes a signature dish of Irpinia. Preparation is entrusted to the local women, wine accompanies the main course, and the evening comes alive with folk music in Piazza Urciuoli.
The closing of the festivities is entrusted to a concert in Piazza Saverio Urciuoli—in recent years featuring well-known names from the Italian and Neapolitan music scene—followed by the fireworks display. It is the evening when the town truly fills up, with visitors arriving from Avellino and all the towns of the Sabato Valley.
Cesinali is located a few kilometers from Avellino, along the route leading towards Serino and the Picentini Mountains. It is a territory of great food and wine tradition—we are in the land of Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo—and the patronal festival is one of the best opportunities to get to know its cuisine, dialect, and rituals. The Campania Region hosts hundreds of summer patronal festivals, but those in Irpinia retain a particularly communal character, far from the tourist-driven logic of the coast.
The festival is promoted by the Saint Roch Festival Committee of Cesinali, in collaboration with the Municipality of Cesinali, the parish, and the local Pro Loco. The complete program, updated year by year, is released shortly before the summer through the Committee's social channels and the local Irpinian press.
In 2026, the patronal calendar of Cesinali will again focus on the second and third weeks of August, following the traditional pattern: solemn mass on August 16th, the liturgical day of Saint Roch, and the procession of the statue through the town streets on the following weekend, with the festivities closing on Monday evening.
The first secular event already announced is the free concert by I Desideri, scheduled for Monday, August 24th, in Piazza Saverio Urciuoli: the duo of brothers Salvatore and Giuliano will bring their mix of pop, rap, and Neapolitan melody to the stage, with a setlist built on their radio hits. The concert is part of the 2026 Irpinian summer free concert series.
The rest of the program—local food festivals, children's evenings, marching bands, opera galas, and the final fireworks display—is traditionally announced by the Saint Roch Festival Committee shortly before the event. Those wishing to plan their visit can follow the Committee's Facebook page and the channels of the Municipality of Cesinali, in the Province of Avellino.
The complete official program for the 2026 edition has not yet been released by the Saint Roch Festival Committee. Below are the already confirmed events and the usual structure of the festivities.
Dates and times for individual events will be published by the Festival Committee and the Pro Loco of Cesinali on dedicated social channels and in the local Irpinian press.
