About Chestnut and Hazelnut Festival

Every October, the historic center of Avella, in the province of Avellino, becomes the gourmet heart of lower Irpinia. For two weekends, the Chestnut and Hazelnut Festival celebrates the fruits of the Irpinian autumn: the famous Avellana hazelnut, chestnuts, porcini mushrooms, local olive oil, and regional wines. With food stalls, folk music, and guided tours of the Roman amphitheater and the castle, it is a village festival that brings together flavors, history, and community.

Two autumn weekends in the historic center of Avella

When October brings the first chill to the slopes of Mount Partenio, the historic center of Avella closes Corso Vittorio Emanuele to traffic and fills with stalls, the scent of roasted chestnuts, and folk music. The Chestnut and Hazelnut Festival has long been the most anticipated event in lower Irpinia: two weekends of festivities that transform this small town in the province of Avellino, Campania, into a showcase for Irpinian autumn produce.

The formula is simple and proven: the streets and squares of the village, from Piazza Municipio to Piazza Convento, host food and craft stalls, while ancient monuments remain open for guided tours. Visitors can stroll, taste local delicacies, enjoy live music, and discover a city with over two thousand years of history.

The Avellana hazelnut, the fruit that gave the city its name

The very name of the festival tells the story of the bond between Avella and its hazelnut. The nux abellana, or "nut of Abella" from the ancient Latin name of the city, is the origin of the term still used today to identify this fruit. Here, it is not just a local specialty, but a symbol of identity, cultivated on the hills surrounding the town alongside ancient chestnut groves.

Alongside the hazelnut, the festival highlights chestnuts, walnuts, porcini mushrooms, local olive oil, and Irpinian wines, starting with Aglianico. It is a faithful snapshot of the agricultural economy of the Clanio Valley, where chestnut and hazelnut farming remain family traditions.

What to taste at the stalls

  • Roasted chestnuts prepared on the spot, the delicious and essential heart of the festival
  • Hazelnut desserts: brittle, nougat, chocolates, and spreads
  • Autumn pasta dishes with chestnuts and porcini mushrooms
  • Traditional peasant meat dishes, from wild boar to local sausages
  • Cheeses, cured meats, honey, and preserves from local producers
  • Irpinian wines and craft beers to pair with your meal

Music, folklore, and street performers

In the evening, the village changes its face: folk groups, traditional music, live bands, and street performers enliven the squares until late, while in recent editions, Piazza Convento has also hosted DJ sets designed for a younger audience. The atmosphere remains that of a genuine village festival, with families strolling among the stalls and volunteers busy at the stoves.

Roman and Medieval Avella: guided tours

One of the event's highlights is the opening of the town's archaeological and monumental heritage. During the festival, the following sites are generally open for visits, with guides and shuttle or tourist train services available:

  • the Roman amphitheater, one of the oldest and most evocative in Campania
  • the monumental Roman tombs at the entrance to the town
  • the Lombard-Norman castle that overlooks the town
  • the Ducal Palace, the convent cloister, and the churches of the historic center
  • the archaeological museum, with its immersive exhibits

Who organizes the festival

The event is promoted by the social promotion association I Rami del Melo, in collaboration with the Pro Loco "Città di Avella" and with the patronage of the Municipality of Avella. Behind the scenes, there is a widespread volunteer effort, typical of Irpinia: dozens of members and families who spend weeks preparing stalls, decorations, and tour routes.

Why it is worth visiting

Those who arrive in Avella in October find much more than a food festival: they find a village that tells its own story, amidst Roman archaeology, chestnut groves, and home-style cooking. It is an ideal stop for a weekend in Campania off the beaten path, less than an hour from Naples and a few kilometers from the Partenio Regional Park. Those who can should choose Sunday afternoon: it is the moment when the scent of roasted chestnuts can be smelled from the entrance to the town.
