Sarno's patronal feast on August 15th, featuring the Sanctuary, the procession, and the Sarno Ferragosto
August 15th, the Solemnity of the Assumption, is much more than just a date on the liturgical calendar for Sarno: it is the day of the city's main patron saint, Maria Santissima delle Tre Corone. In the Municipality of Sarno, located in the province of Salerno at the foot of the mountains bordering the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese in Campania, locals call it the "festival of festivals" because it brings together the parish community, local associations, and those returning home for the summer.
The celebrations span more than a single day: they begin in early August with a novena, continue with the descent of the miraculous painting from the high altar, and culminate on the 15th with a solemn mass and a procession through the streets of the center. The Sarno Ferragosto, the civil section of the municipal summer program, develops around these religious events.
The devotion stems from a canvas painted in 1776 by the Neapolitan artist Paolo De Maio, brought to Sarno by the nobleman Michele Volpicelli, who adorned it with gold ornaments—the lily, the star, and the triple crown—from which the popular name "Madonna delle Tre Corone" (Madonna of the Three Crowns) derives. The image quickly became the heart of Sarno's popular piety: the city attributed its safety during a typhus epidemic and the eruption of Vesuvius to her protection, and by 1779, the Virgin was proclaimed main patron saint of Sarno, with the feast permanently set for August 15th.
The church that houses it, built where the ancient chapel of the Monte dei Morti once stood, became a parish in 1967 and was elevated to a Diocesan Sanctuary in 1973. Today, the Sanctuary of Piazza Michelangelo Capua is one of the key Marian landmarks of the Diocese of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno.
2026 is a special year for the parishes in the center of Sarno: it marks the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the miraculous painting (1776) and the 247th anniversary of the proclamation of the Virgin as patron saint (1779). The journey toward the feast has been marked by the traditional fifteen Sundays of preparation and an initial solemn descent of the painting, featuring meetings, catechesis, and musical moments organized by the parish community alongside the Diocese.
The calendar of celebrations maintains a very recognizable structure, passed down from generation to generation:
The civil portion is known as the Sarno Ferragosto and is part of the Sarno Summer program promoted by the Municipality. In previous years, it has brought concerts by well-known artists to Piazza 5 Maggio, along with theatrical performances, local artist exhibitions, children's evenings, art and sculpture shows, and the "Vie del Gusto" food and wine festival, showcasing the flavors of the Agro Sarnese-Nocerino.
In 2026, the summer program was scaled back by the Extraordinary Commission administering the Municipality, with a reduced budget and the cancellation of the major August 15th concert; however, the Solemnities of the Assumption from August 14th to 16th and support for initiatives promoted by parishes and local associations remain confirmed.
Those arriving in Sarno on August 15th will find an authentic popular festival: the illuminations, the balconies draped in fabric, the band crossing the center from the morning, and the anticipation of the evening procession. It is an opportunity to get to know a Campanian community that still recognizes its identity in the cult of its patron saint, just a few kilometers from the ruins of Pompeii.
The solemn feast in honor of Maria Santissima delle Tre Corone takes place in Sarno from August 6th to 16th, 2026, at the eponymous Sanctuary-Parish of Piazza Michelangelo Capua. This edition has special significance: the community celebrates the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the miraculous painting (1776) and the 247th anniversary of the proclamation of the Virgin as main patron saint of the city (1779), when the feast was permanently set for August 15th.
Preparation began months earlier with the traditional fifteen Sundays dedicated to Marian devotion and an initial solemn descent of the miraculous painting between May 30th and 31st, one of the most heartfelt moments for the people of Sarno. The jubilee path also included meetings and musical moments promoted by the parish together with the Diocese of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno, led by Bishop Monsignor Giuseppe Giudice.
The heart of the celebrations remains the day of August 15th, with holy masses at the Sanctuary, the solemn Eucharistic celebration, and the procession through the historic center accompanied by the "Città di Sarno" band, followed by the ancient offering of the baskets upon returning to Piazza Capua. In the preceding days, the novena and the second descent of the painting take place between August 14th and 15th.
On the civil side, the Extraordinary Commission administering the Municipality of Sarno has adjusted the 2026 Sarno Summer program, reducing the budget and foregoing the traditional large concert on August 15th. The Solemnities of the Assumption from August 14th to 16th and financial support for initiatives by parishes and local associations remain confirmed.
The detailed program with times, celebrants, and civil events was not yet fully published at the time of information gathering: it is advisable to check for updates on the channels of the parish and the Municipality of Sarno.
The celebrations revolve around the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima delle Tre Corone, at Piazza Michelangelo Capua 22 in Sarno (84087, province of Salerno). The procession winds through the historic center; the civil events of the Sarno Ferragosto are usually held in Piazza 5 Maggio and other central squares.
By car: A30 Caserta-Salerno motorway, Sarno exit, or A3 Naples-Salerno continuing on the SS268. By train: Sarno station on the Circumvesuviana (EAV) line from Naples, and Sarno railway station on the Salerno-Codola-Sarno line. Nearest airport: Naples-Capodichino, approximately 40 km away.
Religious celebrations, the procession, and events in the square are free of charge. Only food and drink at the stalls, when present, are paid.
On August 15th, the center of Sarno is closed to traffic during the procession: it is advisable to park on the outskirts and reach the Sanctuary on foot. The Ferragosto evenings are very crowded, so it is better to arrive a little early to find a spot in the square.
