The signature pastry of the Vesuvius town, bridging a historic square festival and the local De.Co. heritage project.

Some towns tell their story through monuments, others through flavors. San Giuseppe Vesuviano, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, undoubtedly belongs to the latter category: here, the San Giuseppe zeppolaโfried or baked choux pastry filled with custard and topped with a black cherryโis much more than a seasonal treat. It is the visible sign of an ancient bond between the community and its Patron Saint, a bond that every year, around March 19th, fills the town's pastry shops and turns the village into a gourmet capital recognized far beyond the borders of Campania.
Tradition has it that the local zeppola was born from the devotion of local women who prepared the pastry as an homage to the Patron Saint. From that domestic practice, a remarkable local school of pastry-making grew, and from this school, the Zeppola Festival was bornโa municipal event documented for at least seventeen editions up to 2019 and traditionally hosted in Piazza Elena d'Aosta, in the heart of the town center.
In its historic editions, the square became a large open-air laboratory, featuring stalls from local pastry shops, tastings, and demonstration sessions. The typical program included:
The classic festival format faced a period of uncertainty: in March 2025, the event was not held in its traditional form, and the management of regional funds allocated for the event became the center of local controversy, while the town's pastry shops continued to bake thousands of zeppole on their own during the Patron Saint's days. However, that same year, the municipal administration led by Mayor Michele Sepe introduced a new project: ZeppolaFest, presented on April 29, 2025, at the Nassiriya Hall of the Campania Regional Council in Naples, with the support of the Region.
The stated goal is twofold: to obtain De.Co. (Municipal Denomination of Origin) recognition for the San Giuseppe zeppola, protecting it as local heritage, and to build a stable path of tourism and cultural promotion around the pastry. On May 28, 2025, Piazza Garibaldi was transformed into an open-air pastry lab involving about four hundred local schoolchildren, guided by master pastry chefs in preparing their own zeppola, from the dough to the custard and black cherry topping.
Those who come to San Giuseppe Vesuviano for the zeppola find something rare: a product that wasn't invented for tourism, but that tourism simply discovered. The town, historically known also for textiles and trade, maintains a strong popular identity and a density of pastry shops that is extraordinary for the size of the municipality. Nearby, the landscape of Mount Vesuvius and its countryside offers an ideal setting to extend your visit, between the National Park, Vesuvius villages, and the nearby archaeological area of Pompeii.
The event is traditionally linked to the March 19th holiday, the feast of Saint Joseph and Father's Day, with initiatives that in recent years have extended into late spring. The dates for the next edition have not yet been made official: it is advisable to check the channels of the Municipality of San Giuseppe Vesuviano and the dedicated ZeppolaFest website before setting off.
The 2026 edition of the San Giuseppe Vesuviano Zeppola Festival is not currently accompanied by an official calendar. The historical reference remains the week around March 19th, when the Municipality celebrates its Patron Saint and the town's pastry shops work tirelessly to prepare the zeppola.
The situation is evolving: after the uncertainty of 2025, the municipal administration has established a broader promotion project with ZeppolaFest, aiming for the De.Co. label and a program of initiatives spread throughout the spring. Until official announcements are made, the date indicated on this page is purely indicative.
By car: Take the San Giuseppe Vesuviano exit on the A3 Naples-Salerno motorway or the A16 junction towards Nola; the center is about 30 km from Naples. By train: Circumvesuviana station of San Giuseppe Vesuviano on the EAV Naples-Sarno line, a few minutes' walk from the center. By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, about 25 km away.
The historic editions of the festival are held in Piazza Elena d'Aosta, in the town center; some initiatives of the ZeppolaFest project took place in Piazza Garibaldi. Both squares are in the urban core and within walking distance.
