About ZeppolaFest

In San Giuseppe Vesuviano, the zeppola is more than just a pastry: it is a symbol of collective identity, born from popular devotion to the Patron Saint and evolved into a specialty renowned throughout Italy. The Zeppola Festival, hosted for years in Piazza Elena d'Aosta with tastings, show cooking, and family entertainment, is now supported by the ZeppolaFest project promoted by the Municipality, which aims to secure De.Co. recognition for the local zeppola and promote the area's master pastry chefs.

The zeppola, emblem of a town

Some towns tell their story through monuments, others through flavors. San Giuseppe Vesuviano, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, undoubtedly belongs to the latter category: here, the San Giuseppe zeppolaโ€”fried or baked choux pastry filled with custard and topped with a black cherryโ€”is much more than a seasonal treat. It is the visible sign of an ancient bond between the community and its Patron Saint, a bond that every year, around March 19th, fills the town's pastry shops and turns the village into a gourmet capital recognized far beyond the borders of Campania.

A festival born from devotion

Tradition has it that the local zeppola was born from the devotion of local women who prepared the pastry as an homage to the Patron Saint. From that domestic practice, a remarkable local school of pastry-making grew, and from this school, the Zeppola Festival was bornโ€”a municipal event documented for at least seventeen editions up to 2019 and traditionally hosted in Piazza Elena d'Aosta, in the heart of the town center.

What to expect in the square

In its historic editions, the square became a large open-air laboratory, featuring stalls from local pastry shops, tastings, and demonstration sessions. The typical program included:

  • tastings of zeppole prepared by local master pastry chefs;
  • show cooking and demonstrations on dough and custard preparation;
  • entertainment for children and families, with jugglers, stilt walkers, and shows;
  • evening music and entertainment to close the day;
  • the opportunity to visit the grand shrine dedicated to Saint Joseph, a pilgrimage destination and a pillar of the town's identity.

The ZeppolaFest project since 2025

The classic festival format faced a period of uncertainty: in March 2025, the event was not held in its traditional form, and the management of regional funds allocated for the event became the center of local controversy, while the town's pastry shops continued to bake thousands of zeppole on their own during the Patron Saint's days. However, that same year, the municipal administration led by Mayor Michele Sepe introduced a new project: ZeppolaFest, presented on April 29, 2025, at the Nassiriya Hall of the Campania Regional Council in Naples, with the support of the Region.

The stated goal is twofold: to obtain De.Co. (Municipal Denomination of Origin) recognition for the San Giuseppe zeppola, protecting it as local heritage, and to build a stable path of tourism and cultural promotion around the pastry. On May 28, 2025, Piazza Garibaldi was transformed into an open-air pastry lab involving about four hundred local schoolchildren, guided by master pastry chefs in preparing their own zeppola, from the dough to the custard and black cherry topping.

Why it's worth the trip

Those who come to San Giuseppe Vesuviano for the zeppola find something rare: a product that wasn't invented for tourism, but that tourism simply discovered. The town, historically known also for textiles and trade, maintains a strong popular identity and a density of pastry shops that is extraordinary for the size of the municipality. Nearby, the landscape of Mount Vesuvius and its countryside offers an ideal setting to extend your visit, between the National Park, Vesuvius villages, and the nearby archaeological area of Pompeii.

When it takes place

The event is traditionally linked to the March 19th holiday, the feast of Saint Joseph and Father's Day, with initiatives that in recent years have extended into late spring. The dates for the next edition have not yet been made official: it is advisable to check the channels of the Municipality of San Giuseppe Vesuviano and the dedicated ZeppolaFest website before setting off.

ZeppolaFest โ€” edition 2026

As of now, there are no official dates for the 2026 San Giuseppe Vesuviano Zeppola Festival. The event remains traditionally linked to the March 19th holiday, the feast of the Patron Saint, while the Municipality continues the path started with the ZeppolaFest project and the application for De.Co. recognition for the local zeppola. It is recommended to check official municipal channels before planning your visit.

The 2026 edition of the San Giuseppe Vesuviano Zeppola Festival is not currently accompanied by an official calendar. The historical reference remains the week around March 19th, when the Municipality celebrates its Patron Saint and the town's pastry shops work tirelessly to prepare the zeppola.

The situation is evolving: after the uncertainty of 2025, the municipal administration has established a broader promotion project with ZeppolaFest, aiming for the De.Co. label and a program of initiatives spread throughout the spring. Until official announcements are made, the date indicated on this page is purely indicative.

How to get there

By car: Take the San Giuseppe Vesuviano exit on the A3 Naples-Salerno motorway or the A16 junction towards Nola; the center is about 30 km from Naples. By train: Circumvesuviana station of San Giuseppe Vesuviano on the EAV Naples-Sarno line, a few minutes' walk from the center. By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, about 25 km away.

Where it takes place

The historic editions of the festival are held in Piazza Elena d'Aosta, in the town center; some initiatives of the ZeppolaFest project took place in Piazza Garibaldi. Both squares are in the urban core and within walking distance.

Practical tips

  • Access to the squares is free; tastings can be purchased at the pastry shops and stalls present.
  • In the days around March 19th, the town's pastry shops work at full capacity: it is best to arrive in the morning or book ahead.
  • Parking in the center is limited during event days: the Circumvesuviana train is a better option.
  • For overnight stays, the widest range of options can be found between Nola, Ottaviano, and the Vesuvius area towards Pompeii.
