Historical re-enactment and gastronomic tour through the ancient courtyards of Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino
In the heart of the Agro Nocerino Sarnese, halfway between Mount Vesuvius and the Lattari Mountains, the town of Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino preserves a historic center filled with gateways, hallways, and courtyards that remain closed in daily life. For one weekend a year, those doors swing wide: this is I Cortili della Storia, the event organized by the local Pro Loco every third weekend of September, which the municipality considers its most important cultural highlight.
The format is a historical re-enactment set between the late Middle Ages and the 16th century, accompanied by a gastronomic journey that winds from one courtyard to the next. This is no mere stage set: the event was born with the explicit goal of restoring the ancient village, returning it to the community, and showcasing its history, architecture, craftsmanship, and cuisine.
The identity of the event is rooted in the Historical Pageant, featuring over a hundred participants in period costume. On Sunday afternoon, the procession moves from Piazza Municipio through the old town: first stopping at the apse of the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie for a salute from the 'Sindaco Universale' (Universal Mayor) of the University of Nocera, then arriving at the Abbey of Santa Maria Maddalena in Armillis, where the re-enactment of the election of the Special Mayor of the ancient University of Sant'Egidio takes place.
It is a piece of administrative history from the Kingdom of Naples: the 'Universities' were local communities endowed with their own elective bodies. In Sant'Egidio, the election of the Special Mayor was held without interruption from the early 16th century until 1806, when Joseph Bonaparte's law on the abolition of feudalism suppressed them in favor of modern municipalities. Restaging this ritual every September means showing visitors how a town in inland Campania truly functioned before the modern era.
Surrounding the procession, the village transforms into a camp of sounds, trades, and wonders. Recent editions have featured:
The private courtyards, illuminated by torches and candles, host carefully reconstructed scenes of daily life: spinning, bread-making, workshops, and banquet tables. This is where the event truly shines, as the spectacle takes place not on a stage, but inside the town's homes.
The gastronomic tour is an integral part of the re-enactment, following historical local recipes. Signature dishes include fusillo sangiliano, the hand-worked pasta that defines Sant'Egidio, and pasta di sciunelle, accompanied by meat stews and citrus-based desserts, the prime product of this plain between Angri, Pagani, and the Amalfi Coast. Participants in period dress serve the tastings directly in the courtyards, seated at tables set up under the arches.
For several years, I Cortili della Storia has served as the closing event for VivaCultura, the summer festival promoted by the Municipality of Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino and the Pro Loco. From mid-July to late September, it brings theater, concerts, book presentations, and the "Birra in Borgo" craft beer festival to Piazza G.B. Ferrajoli and the Palazzo Ferrajoli courtyard. In 2026, the festival theme is "The Roots of the Future," and the thirtieth edition of I Cortili represents its grand finale.
Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino is located in the province of Salerno, just a few kilometers from the highway junctions connecting Naples and Salerno, and a short distance from the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, and other major archaeological sites in Campania. The Pro Loco has designed the event as a gateway to this circuit: a September weekend, a village that reopens, and a tradition that is not imported folklore, but the town's living civil memory.
For 2026, I Cortili della Storia reaches the milestone of its 30th edition. The event, confirmed by organizers and local press, is set for Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20, 2026, in the historic center of Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino, in the province of Salerno.
The event is the grand finale of VivaCultura 2026, the summer festival organized by the Municipality and the Pro Loco, which transforms the village into a widespread stage between Piazza G.B. Ferrajoli and the Palazzo Ferrajoli courtyard from July 15 to September 20, under the theme 'The Roots of the Future'. After the July theater, August musical shows, and the ninth edition of 'Birra in Borgo', it is now time for the historical and gastronomic re-enactment to close the program.
As per tradition, the organization is entirely entrusted to the Pro Loco of Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino, which opens the private courtyards of the old town and reconstructs the life of the village between the late Middle Ages and the 16th century, complete with costumed participants, traditional trades, and period cuisine.
The 30th edition of I Cortili della Storia takes place on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20, 2026, organized by the Pro Loco of Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino, closing the VivaCultura 2026 festival 'The Roots of the Future'. The stage is the historic center, with Piazza G.B. Ferrajoli and the Palazzo Ferrajoli courtyard.
As of today, the detailed program for the 2026 edition, including specific show times, has not yet been published. Following the established formula, Saturday evening is dedicated to opening the courtyards, the medieval arts and crafts fair, and itinerant shows in the alleys. Sunday features the medieval market and tastings throughout the day, and in the late afternoon, the Historical Pageant with the re-enactment of the election of the Special Mayor of the ancient University of Sant'Egidio, concluding at the Abbey of Santa Maria Maddalena in Armillis.
This page will be updated as soon as the Pro Loco releases the official poster with times and appointments.

Historic center of Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino (SA), with Piazza G.B. Ferrajoli and the Palazzo Ferrajoli courtyard as main hubs; the Historical Pageant departs from Piazza Municipio and arrives at the Abbey of Santa Maria Maddalena in Armillis.
The town is located in the Agro Nocerino Sarnese, in the province of Salerno, between Angri and Pagani. By car, it is reached via the A3 Naples-Salerno motorway, with the nearest exits being Angri and Pagani. By train, the reference stations on the Naples-Salerno line are Pagani and Nocera Inferiore, connected to the center by local bus lines. The nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino.
The event takes place entirely outdoors on stone streets and staircases of the old town: comfortable shoes are essential. On Sunday afternoon, during the Historical Pageant, the center is closed to traffic: it is best to park on the outskirts and walk up. For tastings in the courtyards, it is advisable to arrive early, as space in the courtyards is limited.
