About Gnocco Festival

For nearly thirty years, the Gnocco Festival has been the most anticipated summer event in Taurano, a small town in the Lauro Valley, in the province of Avellino. From August 6 to 9, 2026, four evenings will transform the town into a massive open-air dining hall, featuring handmade gnocchi prepared according to traditional rural recipes, local Irpinian products, regional wines, and live music by Radio Marte artists. Free admission in a truly unique setting.

One of Irpinia's longest-running festivals

In Taurano, a town of just over 1,500 residents nestled in the Lauro Valley on the western edge of the Avellino province, the first week of August has long held a special meaning: it is time for the Gnocco Festival. Reaching its 30th edition in 2026, the event has become one of the most renowned gastronomic highlights of the Irpinian summer, drawing thousands of visitors annually from across Campania, particularly from the Nola and Naples areas, located just thirty kilometers away.

This is no manufactured event; the festival is deeply rooted in the community, organized by the Pro Loco Taurano in collaboration with the municipal administration and the Franciscan friars of the convent, with dozens of local volunteers working the stoves, registers, and table service.

The gnocchi, the undisputed star

The dish that gives the festival its name is the gnocchi, handmade according to local rural tradition: a simple dough of flour, eggs, and potatoes, rolled and cut by the town's women in the days leading up to the event. The classic topping remains the traditional fresh tomato sauce, sausage, and local pecorino cheese, though various versions are offered throughout the evenings—with meat sauce, truffle, porcini mushrooms, or seasonal vegetables—for those looking to sample more than one dish.

Alongside the gnocchi, the food stalls showcase the best of Irpinian popular cuisine:

  • Grilled sausages and stuffed sandwiches
  • Meatballs, cured meats, and stockfish
  • Pecorino, caciocavallo, and smoked provola cheese
  • Wood-fired homemade bread
  • Traditional desserts and soft nougat
  • Wines from the province of Avellino—Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, Aglianico—and draft beer

San Giovanni del Palco, a setting like no other

What sets the Taurano festival apart from the many summer feasts in Campania is its venue: the courtyard of the San Giovanni del Palco Convent, a Franciscan complex founded in 1396 overlooking the valley. The dining area offers over a thousand seats, and in recent editions, the Pro Loco has provided a shuttle service connecting parking areas to the courtyard to avoid congestion on the narrow roads leading up to the convent.

During the festival evenings, visitors can also explore the convent itself and the remains of the 1st-century AD Roman villa discovered on the site, turning a culinary evening into a brief discovery of local heritage, a rarity in the landscape of village festivals.

Music, dancing, and a street market

The four evenings offer more than just food. Each night, the stage hosts live performances: past editions have featured ballroom dance groups, Latin American bands, folk music, and karaoke nights, while for the 2026 edition, entertainment is provided by the Radio Marte network. Completing the scene is a street market with stalls selling local products and crafts, filling the narrow streets around the festival area.

Why it's worth the trip

The Gnocco Festival is a great starting point for exploring this lesser-known corner of Campania, where Irpinia blends into the Nola area. Those arriving on Saturday—the busiest night—would be wise to arrive early: stands open in the evening and queues form quickly. Admission is free and no reservations are required; you only pay for what you eat, at typical village festival prices.

The 30th edition

With the 2026 edition, the Gnocco Festival of Taurano reaches the milestone of thirty years of history. The formula remains the one that led to its success: four consecutive evenings, from August 6 to 9, with Pro Loco food stalls set up in the village and the courtyard of the San Giovanni del Palco Convent, with handmade gnocchi as the undisputed star.

Alongside the signature dish, there will be sausage and friarielli, smoked provola, caciocavallo, homemade bread, and traditional desserts, while the wine bar will serve Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, and Aglianico. Each evening, the stage will host live shows by artists from the Radio Marte network, with music and dancing until late at night.
