About Festa delle Lucerne

Every four years, in early August, the Borgo Casamale in Somma Vesuviana transforms into a gallery of light. Thousands of terracotta oil lamps are arranged on wooden structures in geometric shapes—circles, squares, triangles, diamonds, and spirals—multiplying reflections along the medieval alleys. This ancient agricultural propitiatory rite, documented as far back as the mid-18th century, is now intertwined with the devotion to the Madonna della Neve on August 5th. It is a defining event for the Vesuvius area, built through the collective effort of citizens, artisans, and volunteers.

A ritual of light in the heart of Vesuvius

The Festa delle Lucerne is one of the oldest and most evocative folk traditions in Campania. It is celebrated in the town of Somma Vesuviana, in the province of Naples, within the Borgo Casamale, the historic core enclosed by Aragonese walls dating back to 1467. For a few days every four years, the village alleys switch off their electric lights and are rekindled by thousands of small terracotta oil lamps, placed one by one on handmade wooden frames.

The result is an unforgettable optical effect: each alley adopts its own geometric shape—circles, squares, triangles, diamonds, spirals—and the repetition of these silhouettes, multiplied by mirrors and perspectives, creates luminous depths that seem endless. This is not a pre-packaged set design, but a collective work: residents, artisans, associations, and volunteers of the village weave the ferns, assemble the structures, and light the lamps, evening after evening.

From agricultural rite to the Madonna della Neve

The origins of the festival are rooted in ancient agricultural propitiatory rites linked to the cycle of nature and the passage from life to death, with roots that local scholars trace back to pagan cults marking the end of summer and thanksgiving for the harvest. The oldest known documentary evidence dates back to the mid-18th century: a 1757 document, preserved in the State Archives of Naples, mentions the "rite of the little lamps" and the expenditure for the oil used to fuel them. The oil was entrusted to the Confraternity of the Snow, established in 1762.

Since then, the rite has been bound to the devotion for the Madonna della Neve, which is celebrated in Somma Vesuviana on August 5th with a solemn mass in the Collegiate Church and the concluding procession. The sacred and the profane coexist naturally: prayer, light, home cooking, and folk art are all part of the same communal gesture.

A rare cadence: every four years

Unlike summer festivals that return annually, the Festa delle Lucerne takes place every four years, and this rarity is part of its strength: the village works long and hard on the preparations, and each edition chooses a theme that guides the installations. The 2026 edition revolves around four keywords—Memory, Legality, Resilience, and Perspective—expressed through the Alley of Memory, the luminous paths, and the installations placed at the four gates of the village.

More than just lamps

Surrounding the evening lighting is a widespread program that spans the ten days prior and immerses visitors in Vesuvius culture:

  • Artisan workshops: woodworking, ceramics, and paper-making using Finnish techniques;
  • Guided tours of Borgo Casamale, the Castle of Lucrezia D'Alagno, and the archaeological excavations of the Villa Augustea;
  • Excursions on the trails of Monte Somma, within the Vesuvius National Park;
  • Show cooking with local chefs, dedicated to Vesuvius cuisine and its products;
  • Presentations of books, comics, and poetry collections inspired by the festival;
  • La Lucerna Incantata, an international art competition that brings works by Italian and foreign authors to the village gates;
  • Activities for children and families, with readings and creative workshops.

Why it's worth the trip

Somma Vesuviana is located just a few kilometers from Naples, at the foot of Monte Somma, and the festival is the best opportunity to discover a village otherwise little-trodden by mass tourism. Walking through the alleys of Casamale as the lamps are lit at 9:00 PM, with the scent of oil and the murmur of families sitting on their doorsteps, offers a glimpse of a community that remains intact. Visitors from outside the region should plan for an entire evening: entry is regulated, paths are one-way, and the visit is meant to be savored slowly.

Festa delle Lucerne — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Festa delle Lucerne brings light back to the Borgo Casamale of Somma Vesuviana after four years of waiting. The program opens on July 27 with setup and a press conference and closes on August 5 with the solemn mass and procession for the Madonna della Neve. The lamps are lit every evening at 9:00 PM starting August 2; the three central days are August 3, 4, and 5. The theme chosen this year is Memory, Legality, Resilience, and Perspective.

Festa delle Lucerne 2026

After the jubilee preview of 2025, the Borgo Casamale of Somma Vesuviana returns to its "natural" four-year edition: from July 27 to August 5, 2026, with the lamps lit from the evening of August 2 and the three main evenings on August 3, 4, and 5.

The edition is built around four words: Memory, with the Alley of Memory and the luminous path of Via Campane; Legality, as a commitment of the community; Resilience, the vitality of a village that continues to produce culture; Perspective, visually rendered by the mirrored geometries that generate infinite luminous depths.

Alongside the lamps, ten days of events: woodworking, ceramic, and paper workshops, guided tours of the village and the Villa Augustea excavations, excursions on Monte Somma, show cooking with local chefs, book and comic presentations, the third edition of the international competition La Lucerna Incantata, and religious services in the Collegiate Church.
