The Nativity comes to life in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, brought to you by the youth of Ercolano's parishes

During the final evenings of December, Piazza Pugliano, the historic and religious core of Ercolano, comes alive with one of the city's most cherished Christmas traditions: the Living Nativity. At the foot of Mount Vesuvius and just a short walk from the archaeological excavations that have made this city near Naples famous, the square transforms into a corner of Bethlehem, where the Nativity scene is brought to life by dozens of costumed performers.
The initiative is promoted by the parishes of Ercolano, which every year involve the local youth, under the patronage of the Municipality of Ercolano. This is more than just a re-enactment: the event holds deep educational and spiritual value, designed to help visitors rediscover the authentic meaning of Christmas through art and theater. In recent editions, the young participants have also performed the musical Rallegrati, dedicated to the story of the Holy Family.
Along the path, visitors encounter traditional artisan workshops and scenes of daily village life: some stations are set up for display, while others offer tastings of traditional local products. There is no shortage of farm animals, which help recreate the rural atmosphere of biblical Palestine. The result is an engaging itinerary for all ages, particularly beloved by families and children.
The square takes its name from the nearby Pontifical Basilica of Santa Maria a Pugliano, one of the oldest and most important places of worship in the Vesuvius area, which often hosts exhibitions and artistic nativity scenes by local masters during the Christmas season. The proximity between the outdoor living nativity and the religious heritage of the basilica makes Piazza Pugliano a natural landmark for Christmas in Ercolano.
The Ercolano Living Nativity is part of the rich nativity tradition of Campania, a region where the art of the nativity scene is a fundamental part of its identity. Unlike static nativity scenes to be admired in shop windows, this Nativity is alive, participatory, and free: a way for the city to come together, between faith and folklore, in the evenings that close the year.
The 2026 edition of the Ercolano Living Nativity has not yet been officially announced: as it is a Christmas event, dates and programs are usually communicated only in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Based on previous editions, we can expect the usual two-day event in Piazza Pugliano, featuring the Nativity scene, traditional artisan workshops, animals, and tastings of local products. Information will be updated as soon as the Municipality of Ercolano and the parishes release the official calendar.
