The "mountain fish" and Avigliano's craftsmanship
In Avigliano, a large village in the province of Potenza far from the sea, the festive dish is codfish: the dried cod that tradition has transformed into the true "mountain fish" of Lucanian cuisine. Every late August, the Sagra del Baccalà, part of the Days of Commerce and Crafts, celebrates this specialty in one of the longest-running gastronomic events in the inner Basilicata region.
The stands wind along a route starting from Viale Verrastro and reaching Piazza Gianturco. The food and wine stalls open around 7 PM; the absolute star is codfish, offered in numerous traditional preparations. Alongside, stalls display cured meats, typical cheeses, sweets, and biscuits like the Avigliano tarallo.
The festival is also a showcase of the artisan trades that have made the town famous: textiles worked on a two-harness loom, artistic embroidery, the traditional knives and crossbows of Avigliano, and artistic ceramics. Exhibitions, displays, shows, and music accompany the evenings, making the festival a complete experience.
Organized by the Municipality of Avigliano, the festival is free and attracts thousands of visitors each year. It's the ideal opportunity to discover a signature dish, Lucanian craftsmanship, and the hospitality of a village overlooking the Potentino hills.
For 2026, Avigliano's Sagra del Baccalà is expected at the end of August, following the tradition of placing it on the first weekend after Ferragosto. The route from Viale Verrastro to Piazza Gianturco and the formula combining gastronomy and crafts are confirmed.
Based on previous editions, the festival includes the opening of food and wine stalls from 7 PM, with codfish as the main dish, alongside cured meats, typical cheeses, Avigliano taralli, and sweets. Along the route, exhibitions and displays of local crafts (loom textiles, knives and crossbows, embroidery, ceramics), shows, and music in the evenings.
The detailed program with dates and guests will be published by the Municipality of Avigliano in the weeks prior.
