The festivals of San Donato and San Rocco in the heart of Ruoti's summer
In the heart of summer, Ruoti — a village in the province of Potenza, in Basilicata — transforms into the stage for a series of deeply felt festivals, where religious devotion blends with the folklore and conviviality typical of the South. Two events mark the calendar: the Festival of Saint Donatus at the beginning of the month and the Patronal Festival of Saint Roch on Ferragosto (August 15th).
Although not the official patron of the town, Saint Donatus, Bishop and Martyr, is the object of intense devotion that draws hundreds of pilgrims from nearby towns to Ruoti. The festival spans two days: the mornings are dedicated to the liturgical solemnity, while the afternoons and evenings offer a rich civil program with concerts and shows. An event that combines recollection and popular celebration.
August 16th is the day of the patron saint Saint Roch, whose statue is kept in the church of the same name in the Spinosa hamlet. After the procession on August 16th, the effigy is transferred to the mother church, where it remains on display for the veneration of the faithful until the first Sunday in September. It is the most solemn moment of Ruoti's summer, experienced with great participation from the entire community.
The August festivals in Ruoti are an opportunity to come together: emigrants returning to their hometown, families reuniting, the streets of the center illuminated by lights. Between processions, musical bands, concerts at the Villa comunale, and music evenings, you can breathe the authentic atmosphere of a Lucanian village that makes its religious tradition the heart of its collective identity.
For 2026, the calendar of Ruoti's festivals is structured as per tradition. The Festival of Saint Donatus is expected on August 6th and 7th, with mornings dedicated to liturgical solemnity and afternoons and evenings enlivened by concerts and shows. The Patronal Festival of Saint Roch culminates on August 16th with the procession of the effigy and its subsequent transfer to the mother church, where the saint remains on display until the first Sunday in September.
The detailed civil program will be announced by the Festival Committee in the weeks preceding the event. Based on recent editions, the structure includes:
How to get there: Ruoti is reached from the Potenza-Melfi junction (Ruoti exit) and is about 25 km from Potenza. Nearest train station: Potenza.
