The pepper focaccia in the medieval village of Castel Lagopesole
In Castel Lagopesole, a picturesque hamlet of Avigliano in the province of Potenza, the queen of the table is the strazzata: a traditional wood-fired Lucanian focaccia, scented with local pepper, a symbol of Avigliano's gastronomy. A festival dedicated to it enlivens the village, dominated by the famous Swabian castle, every year between the end of October and the beginning of November.
The heart of the festival is the tasting of strazzata and other local specialities, prepared according to ancient recipes. Alongside the food stalls, there are cooking workshops for families and children, introducing the little ones to the flavours and gestures of peasant tradition.
The setting is the unique Castle of Frederick II of Swabia, one of the most imposing manors in Basilicata. During the festival, guided tours of the castle and walks in the nearby Riserva delle Coste del Castello are organised, while music, folk dances, and craft exhibitions complete the festive atmosphere.
With a long tradition, the Sagra della Strazzata is one of the most beloved autumn gastronomic events in the Potentino area. Visiting it means combining the pleasure of a genuine local product with the discovery of a medieval village of great historical and scenic charm.
For 2026, the Sagra della Strazzata is expected in Castel Lagopesole from October 31 to November 2, in the usual slot around All Saints' Day. The formula of tastings, workshops, tours of the Swabian castle, and folk music is confirmed.
Based on previous editions, the program includes tasting of strazzata and local specialities, cooking workshops for families and children, guided tours of Frederick II's Castle, walks in the Riserva delle Coste del Castello, as well as music, folk dances, and craft exhibitions.
The detailed program with times and guests will be announced in the weeks preceding the event.
