The great festival of DOP cheese and dairy products
The Sagra del Pecorino di Filiano DOP and Dairy Products is one of the historic sagre (local festivals) of Basilicata. Organised by the Pro Loco Filiano, it celebrates Pecorino di Filiano DOP, a cheese made from the milk of sheep grazing in the north-western area of Potenza, where over 160,000 head of sheep sustain a centuries-old cheesemaking tradition.
Considered the most important exhibition-market of dairy products in the region, the sagra brings together producers from about thirty municipalities in the area. Among the stalls, you can find pecorino cheeses of various ages, ricotta, caciocavallo and other cheeses, accompanied by guided tastings curated over the years by entities such as the Hospitality Institute of Melfi and AIS Basilicata, and enhanced by local honey products.
The event blends gastronomy, culture, and entertainment. The evenings come alive with folk music and groups, while the programme includes visits to the "Carpini Museum" Visitor Centre and the rock paintings of Riparo Ranaldi, an activity that links the festival to the archaeological and natural heritage of the area. The traditional "treccia" (plait) made by local cheesemakers is a must-see. The sagra is recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Basilicata.
The Municipality of Filiano, in the Province of Potenza, with its hamlets of Scalera and Dragonetti, provides the backdrop for a festival that is both a source of identity pride and a great promotional opportunity for local producers, capable of attracting thousands of visitors.
The 52nd edition of the Sagra del Pecorino di Filiano DOP is scheduled from September 5th to 7th, 2026. The event, organised by Pro Loco Filiano, confirms its three-day format, held between the Carpini area and the town centre, featuring producer stalls, guided tastings, and folk music performances.

How to get there: Filiano is located north of Potenza, reachable via the SP for Avigliano and the provincial road network of Vulture-Melfese.
