About Agosto Ruvese

For most of August, Ruvo del Monte, a village in the Vulture-Melfese area of the province of Potenza, celebrates its patron saints San Rocco and San Donato Martire with the Agosto Ruvese: novenas, solemn processions, the Cavatelli Festival, concerts, and fireworks. A packed calendar of sacred and secular events organized by the Pro Loco.

A whole month of celebration

Ruvo del Monte, a small village in the Vulture-Melfese area of the province of Potenza, dedicates a large part of August to celebrations in honor of its patron saints, San Rocco and San Donato Martire. The Agosto Ruvese is a rich and varied program, where religious solemnities intertwine with gastronomic, musical, and entertainment events, organized by the Pro Loco of Ruvo del Monte together with the parish community.

The spiritual journey

Religious celebrations accompany the entire month. Every day, in the afternoon, the Rosary is recited and Mass is celebrated; from the beginning of August, novenas dedicated to the Madonna Assunta, San Rocco, and San Donato begin, leading up to the solemnity of the Assumption on August 15th. The religious heart of the festival is August 16th, the day of San Rocco, with the arrival of the band in the morning and the solemn procession, and August 17th and 18th dedicated to San Donato Martire, with the pontifical Mass and the final procession.

Flavors and spectacle

  • The Cavatelli Festival ("cavatiell cu cas e rcott") in Piazza Ungheria, one of the most beloved gastronomic events;
  • Traditional lamb-based specialties in Piazza Bologna;
  • Free concerts and fireworks displays to conclude the solemn days.

The village of Vulture

Overlooking the Ofanto valley, on the border with Campania, Ruvo del Monte retains the authentic atmosphere of Lucanian villages. During the Agosto Ruvese, the town fills with lights, the aromas of traditional cuisine, and music, welcoming residents, returning emigrants, and visitors in a festive atmosphere that lasts for weeks.
