Patronal feasts of San Rocco and San Donato in Ruvo del Monte
Ruvo del Monte, a small village in the Vulture-Melfese area of the province of Potenza, dedicates a large part of August to celebrations in honor of its patron saints, San Rocco and San Donato Martire. The Agosto Ruvese is a rich and varied program, where religious solemnities intertwine with gastronomic, musical, and entertainment events, organized by the Pro Loco of Ruvo del Monte together with the parish community.
Religious celebrations accompany the entire month. Every day, in the afternoon, the Rosary is recited and Mass is celebrated; from the beginning of August, novenas dedicated to the Madonna Assunta, San Rocco, and San Donato begin, leading up to the solemnity of the Assumption on August 15th. The religious heart of the festival is August 16th, the day of San Rocco, with the arrival of the band in the morning and the solemn procession, and August 17th and 18th dedicated to San Donato Martire, with the pontifical Mass and the final procession.
Overlooking the Ofanto valley, on the border with Campania, Ruvo del Monte retains the authentic atmosphere of Lucanian villages. During the Agosto Ruvese, the town fills with lights, the aromas of traditional cuisine, and music, welcoming residents, returning emigrants, and visitors in a festive atmosphere that lasts for weeks.
For 2026, the Pro Loco of Ruvo del Monte is organizing the Agosto Ruvese with its established format. From the beginning of the month, novenas to the Madonna Assunta, San Rocco, and San Donato will take place; on August 15th, the solemnity of the Assumption will be celebrated; August 16th is the day of the patron saint San Rocco with a procession, while August 17th and 18th are dedicated to San Donato Martire. Among the civil events are the Cavatelli Festival in Piazza Ungheria and evening concerts.
