About Agosto Ruvese

For most of August, Ruvo del Monte, a village in the Vulture-Melfese area of Potenza province, celebrates its patron saints San Rocco and San Donato Martire with the Agosto Ruvese: novenas, solemn processions, the Cavatelli Festival, concerts, and fireworks. A packed calendar of sacred and secular events organised by the Pro Loco.

A whole month of celebration

Ruvo del Monte, a small village in the Vulture-Melfese area of Potenza province, dedicates a large part of August to celebrations in honour of its patron saints, San Rocco and San Donato Martire. The Agosto Ruvese is a rich and varied calendar, where religious solemnities intertwine with gastronomic, musical, and entertainment events, organised by the Pro Loco of Ruvo del Monte together with the parish community.

The spiritual journey

Religious celebrations accompany the entire month. Every day in the afternoon, the Rosary is recited and Mass is celebrated; from the beginning of August, novenas dedicated to the Madonna Assunta, San Rocco, and San Donato begin, leading up to the solemnity of the Assumption on August 15th. The religious heart of the festival is August 16th, the day of San Rocco, with the arrival of the marching band in the morning and the solemn procession, and August 17th and 18th dedicated to San Donato Martire, with the pontifical Mass and the concluding procession.

Flavours and spectacle

  • The Sagra dei Cavatelli ("cavatiell cu cas e rcott") in Piazza Ungheria, one of the most beloved gastronomic events;
  • Traditional lamb-based specialities in Piazza Bologna;
  • Free concerts and fireworks displays to close the solemn days.

The village of Vulture

Overlooking the Ofanto valley, on the border with Campania, Ruvo del Monte preserves the authentic atmosphere of Lucanian villages. During the Agosto Ruvese, the town fills with lights, the aromas of traditional cuisine, and music, welcoming residents, returning emigrants, and visitors in a festive atmosphere that lasts for weeks.

Agosto Ruvese — edition 2026

The Agosto Ruvese 2026 will again feature the usual festival calendar in Ruvo del Monte: novenas from the beginning of August, the Cavatelli Festival around August 12th, the Feast of San Rocco on August 16th, and the Feast of San Donato Martire on August 17th-18th with a concert and fireworks.

For 2026 too, the Pro Loco of Ruvo del Monte is organising the Agosto Ruvese, with its established structure. From the beginning of the month, novenas to the Madonna Assunta, San Rocco, and San Donato begin; on August 15th, the solemnity of the Assumption is celebrated; August 16th is the day of the patron saint San Rocco with a procession, while August 17th and 18th are dedicated to San Donato Martire.
