The Lower Salento chili pepper festival in Morciano di Leuca
In the height of the Salento summer, Morciano di Leuca ignites with bold flavors during the Sagra de li Diavulicchi, a festival dedicated to the spicy chili pepper—affectionately known in the local dialect as diavulicchiu, or 'little devil'. Organized by the Li Diavulicchi Association with the support of the entire community, the event transforms the historic center of this small town in the province of Lecce into a journey of taste and tradition, where spicy heat is the absolute star in all its forms.
The heart of the festival lies in its food stalls, where you can sample traditional Salento peasant dishes with a fiery twist. Must-tries include pittole, rustic pizzas, frise topped with oil, tomatoes, and chili, fragrant focaccias, and homemade pasta. The signature dish remains the salamura mara, an ancient spicy sauce from the Capo di Leuca made from chili peppers, which tells the story of centuries of preservation and traditional 'cucina di recupero' (peasant recovery cooking).
On a stage set up in the town center, Salento folk music groups perform, with the inevitable pizzica keeping the squares and alleys dancing until late. Alongside the food and music, there is an artisan market featuring local exhibitors and their handmade creations, a 'Campagna Amica' area with genuine zero-kilometer products, and a space dedicated to chili pepper culture. The most anticipated moment is the chili-eating contest, a challenge that puts the bravest palates to the test.
The Sagra de li Diavulicchi stands out for its commitment to the environment: thanks to the use of biodegradable tableware and waste sorting, the event has earned the voluntary Ecofesta Puglia certification, becoming a model for low-impact popular festivals. It is an event that unites identity, taste, and respect for the land in the small village of Morciano di Leuca, overlooking the extreme tip of Salento, just a few kilometers from Santa Maria di Leuca.
The 17th edition of the Sagra de li Diavulicchi will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2026, in Morciano di Leuca, in the Capo di Leuca region. As every year, the Li Diavulicchi Association renews its appointment with the chili pepper festival, featuring food stalls, folk music, and local crafts.
The date is confirmed by local sources; the detailed program for the evening, including the announcement of the guest musical group, is usually published by the association on its social media channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
