Devotion and the historic December 13th fair in the Capo di Leuca
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Salento winter, on December 13th, the town of Morciano di Leuca—located in the province of Lecce at the southernmost tip of Puglia known as Capo di Leuca—gathers to honor Saint Lucy, the patron saint of sight. It is one of the most cherished local traditions, uniting the community's religious fervor with the vibrancy of a fair that dates back centuries.
The Saint Lucy Fair is the secular side of the celebration. From the first light of dawn, the two main squares and the town's streets come alive with stalls where you can find everything:
Alongside the fair, as Christmas approaches, Christmas markets take shape. The Apostleship of Prayer religious association organizes an annual exhibition of embroidery and sewing work created by volunteers, while local schools also participate by showcasing Christmas crafts made by students. It is a tapestry of faith, craftsmanship, and community involvement that engages all of Morciano.
The most solemn moment is religious: masses begin at dawn, followed by the traditional procession that winds through the town streets with the statue of the Saint, accompanied by a brass band and various local associations. The day ends late in the evening with a fireworks display, lighting up the December sky to bid farewell to the festival.
The festival is organized by the Saint Lucy Festival Committee, which collaborates annually with volunteers and the parish priest to keep this centuries-old tradition alive. For Morciano di Leuca—a lower Salento town that includes the hamlets of Barbarano del Capo, Torre Vado, and Torre Pali—Saint Lucy represents a defining appointment and an opportunity to gather during the most evocative time of the year, between the sacred and the profane, in a corner of Puglia far from the crowded rhythms of summer.
Dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced. As it coincides with the liturgical feast of Saint Lucy, the celebrations are traditionally tied to December 13th. We recommend following the channels of the Municipality of Morciano di Leuca and the Festival Committee for updates.
Morciano di Leuca is located in lower Salento, in the province of Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the SS275 towards Santa Maria di Leuca. The nearest train station is Gagliano-Leuca (Ferrovie Sud Est), while the reference airports are Brindisi and Bari.
The festival is celebrated on December 13th, the day of Saint Lucy. The fair and stalls liven up the center from the morning.
Participation in the festival and fair is free and open to all.
