The Santa Lucia Fair in Tricase

In the calendar of Tricase's festivities, the Santa Lucia Fair holds a special place: it is the event that, every year around December 13th, effectively kicks off the Christmas season in lower Salento. It takes place in the Santa Lucia district of Tricase, a municipality in the Province of Lecce overlooking the Adriatic, and revolves around the small chapel dedicated to the martyr from Syracuse. It is one of those local festivals where religious devotion, mercantile tradition, and neighborhood social life are inextricably intertwined.

A fair of ancient origins

The fair is a market of ancient origins that spreads through the streets of the town, in the square in front of the Santa Lucia chapel, and in the nearby alleys. From the early hours of the morning, stalls take over the district: here you can mainly find figurines and decorations for the nativity scene, items for Christmas displays, and numerous typical products of the season, but also household goods, sweets, and small handicrafts. For many local families, it is the traditional occasion to start preparing for Christmas at home, among statuettes, moss, and decorations.

Markets, music, and Salento Christmas products

Alongside the morning fair, in recent years the festival has found new vitality thanks to the redevelopment of Piazza Santa Lucia, which has been transformed into a true Christmas corner. In the evening, the district lights up with craft markets and gift ideas, music and cultural shows, small rides, and entertainment designed for children, without forgetting the zero-kilometer street food featuring the flavors of Salento cuisine. The goal declared by the organizers is to restore to the square the vitality and sociality it deserves, making it an authentic meeting place for the community.

The religious festival

The civil and mercantile dimension coexists with the devotional one. In the district chapel, masses are celebrated in honor of Saint Lucia, patron saint of eyesight, and the festival traditionally culminates with a procession accompanied by a brass band concert and a fireworks display, following a ritual that has been repeated for generations. The organization is managed by the Festa Committee of the Confraternity of S. Rocco-S. Lucia, together with the Municipal Administration of Tricase, the Pro Loco, the parish, and the district merchants.

The Santa Lucia Fair is the best way to experience Christmas as it is truly lived in Salento: without frills, amidst the scent of sweets, nativity scene stalls, and popular devotion to the Saint.
