In the heart of the Salento region, every December 13th, Scorrano celebrates the Santa Lucia Fair, one of the most popular and deeply felt winter events in Southern Salento. The feast dedicated to the Syracusan martyr, venerated as the Saint of Light and protector of eyesight, draws worshippers, curious onlookers, and visitors from all neighboring towns to the historic center, combining religious devotion with the festive spirit of a large market.
The Santa Lucia feast in Scorrano has roots dating back to the 19th century: the tradition has been renewed without interruption since 1839, bearing witness to the community's long-standing devotion. The cult revolves around the 18th-century Baroque church of Santa Lucia, which houses exquisite papier-mâché statues, including the one of the saint placed on the high altar, a work by the Lecce sculptor Antonio Malecore. On the day of the feast, the faithful visit the church to light candles and fulfill vows to the Saint of Light, while liturgical celebrations continue from morning until late afternoon.
Surrounding the religious rites is the characteristic market, with hundreds of exhibitors enlivening the main streets and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. The heart of the event is the so-called fiera dei pupi (fair of the puppets), where visitors can purchase traditional papier-mâché and terracotta shepherds to set up their home nativity scenes, along with Christmas decorations, Christmas trees, fabrics, gift items, and festive specialties.
The day is marked by the aromas of winter Salento cuisine. Food stands offer the essential pittule, roasted chestnuts, local cheeses, and cured meats, all accompanied by mulled wine and hot chocolate, often distributed by Civil Protection volunteers. There is no shortage of popular entertainment, with the music of bagpipers, theatrical performances, and Santa's house for the little ones, making the fair an event awaited by the whole family.
The Santa Lucia Fair is part of the rich Christmas program of the Municipality of Scorrano, in the Province of Lecce, a village in Puglia known throughout the world as the capital of luminarie (artistic light displays). During the holiday season, the town transforms into a path of suspended light galleries, markets, nativity scenes, and artistic installations, offering visitors a unique experience where religious tradition, craftsmanship, and spectacle merge into the most authentic identity of Salento.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced by the Municipality of Scorrano. The fair is traditionally held on December 13th, the day of Santa Lucia: it is recommended to check the final program on the official municipal channels as the holidays approach.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition of the Santa Lucia Fair has not yet been published.
