About Pittula Festival

The Pittula and Focareddha Festival is the most delicious and heartfelt Christmas tradition in Specchia, located in the heart of the Salento region near Lecce. Every Christmas Eve, the local Pro Loco lights the focareddha in Piazza del Popolo—a massive, five-meter-tall bonfire traditionally meant to warm the Baby Jesus. Visitors gather around the flames to enjoy hot, crispy Salento pittule, olive-stuffed pucce, and local wine while awaiting Midnight Mass.

A decades-old Christmas tradition

The Pittula and Focareddha Festival is one of the most beloved popular events in Specchia, a village in the province of Lecce recognized as one of Italy's most beautiful and nestled in the lower Salento of Puglia. For over thirty years, every Christmas Eve, the Pro Loco of Specchia, in collaboration with the local municipality, transforms the central Piazza del Popolo into a vibrant meeting point for the entire community, where the aroma of freshly fried pittule mingles with the warmth of the fire and the anticipation of the holiday season.

The focareddha, the Christmas Eve bonfire

The symbolic heart of the evening is the focareddha, an impressive bonfire about five meters high, built with branches and wood collected through the contributions of all the local residents. As evening falls, the fire is lit in the square, and according to local Salento tradition, it serves to warm and welcome the newborn Jesus on the night of his birth. Young and old gather around the flames in an ancient ritual that marks the start of the festivities, blending spirituality, folklore, and conviviality.

Pittule, the queens of the Salento table

The absolute stars of the show are the pittule, the typical leavened dough fritters that have always accompanied the Christmas season in Salento. At the festival stands, you can taste numerous varieties: plain, with cauliflower, with salt cod, pizzaiola style, with anchovies, or with "paparussu allu vasu". They are served alongside vuliate (olive-stuffed pucce) and local wine, while the evening is usually enlivened by live music from a local band.

A community Christmas

The event is part of the rich Christmas calendar of Specchia and the Salento region. In the days leading up to Christmas Eve, the village also hosts a Christmas market in the streets of the historic center, featuring handicrafts, local products, and gift ideas. The Pittula and Focareddha Festival is much more than just a gastronomic event: it is a moment of shared joy that renews, from generation to generation, the bond between the inhabitants and their roots and the traditions of Puglia.

Pittula Festival — edition 2026

At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the event is traditionally held on Christmas Eve, with the lighting of the large focareddha bonfire and the Salento pittule stands. The detailed program will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.

The 2026 edition of the Pittula and Focareddha Festival in Specchia has not yet been officially announced. Traditionally, the festival takes place on Christmas Eve in Piazza del Popolo, with the lighting of the focareddha and the tasting of Salento pittule.
