The Christmas festival dedicated to pittule in the heart of lower Salento
In the lead-up to Christmas, the historic center of Tiggiano, a tiny village in the lower Salento area of the province of Lecce, transforms into a large open-air kitchen for the Pittula Festival, affectionately called La Pittulata by the locals. Organized by the local Pro Loco, the event gathers residents and visitors around the iconic dish of the Salento winter: the pittula.
Pittule (or pettole) are small, soft, slightly stretchy balls of leavened dough, fried in boiling oil until golden and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. In Salento, they are enjoyed plain, lightly dusted with salt, or stuffed according to recipes passed down from home to home: with cauliflower, herring, "pizzaiola" style with tomato and capers, or with anchovies. During the festival, they are prepared and served hot, often accompanied by other local flavors such as pepper stew sandwiches, chicory, fennel, and a glass of Salento wine.
La Pittulata has roots in an ancient custom. A popular Salento saying goes, "Te l'Immaculata la prima pittulata": the day of the Immaculate Conception, December 8th, marks the start of the pittule season, traditionally cooked for the first time as a good omen for a rich and prosperous year. From then on throughout the Christmas holidays, the scent of frying dough accompanies Salento families. The Tiggiano festival brings this domestic ritual into the public square, restoring its communal and festive spirit.
The event typically takes place in December, close to the holidays, featuring the distribution of pittule in various versions, Christmas markets with local crafts and products, and the essential Salento folk music, ranging from traditional songs to the rhythms of the pizzica. It is a simple, family-friendly celebration designed to bring people together in the winter cold around warm, genuine food that captures the gastronomic identity of Salento better than words ever could.
Located in the heart of the Capo di Leuca, just a few kilometers from both the Adriatic and Ionian coasts, Tiggiano is a compact and authentic village in the southernmost part of Puglia, also known for its 17th-century Palazzo Baronale Serafini-Sauli and its park. The Pittula Festival is part of the village's rich calendar of events, which includes the famous Pestanaca Festival in January, dedicated to the patron saint, Sant'Ippazio. Attending La Pittulata means discovering a wintertime Salento, far from the summer crowds, defined by living traditions and genuine local hospitality.
For 2026, the Pittula Festival will return to Tiggiano during the Christmas season, as per established tradition. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced by the Pro Loco: Salento event calendars place it tentatively around December 21, but it is recommended to wait for the official announcement before planning your visit.
The format will remain the one loved by the locals: distribution of hot pittule, both plain and stuffed, Christmas markets, and Salento folk music. The detailed program will be published in the weeks leading up to the event.
Tiggiano can be reached by car from Lecce via the SS275 road towards Santa Maria di Leuca (approx. 55 km). The nearest train station served by Ferrovie del Sud Est is in Tricase or Gagliano del Capo. The reference airport is Brindisi Salento Airport.
The festival is held in the town center in December, generally close to the Christmas holidays. It is advisable to check the exact date and updated program with the Pro Loco Tiggiano or the Municipality before traveling.
As this is an evening winter event, warm clothing is recommended. Tastings are generally offered according to the tradition of local village festivals.
