The festival of Salento pittule in the village of Surano
The Pittula Festival is one of the most heartfelt events in the Christmas calendar of Surano, a small town in lower Salento in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Puglia. Every year, in the days leading up to Christmas, the town's historic center fills with scents, lights, and joy to celebrate the pittula, the round fritter that serves as a symbol of Salento's peasant cuisine.
The event was founded in 1983 by the municipal administration and is now one of the longest-running festivals in the entire province of Lecce. Edition after edition, the festival has kept its genuine spirit intact: that of a community gathering in the square, around the warmth of the fryers, to share a simple yet meaningful dish. The pittula, after all, is among the Traditional Agri-food Products (PAT) recognized by the Puglia Region.
The heart of the festival is the free distribution of pittule, served hot and fragrant in numerous variations. Alongside the classic, simple version, visitors can enjoy the enriched versions typical of the Salento tradition:
The pittule are paired with local wine and the flavors of rural gastronomy, in a convivial atmosphere that attracts visitors from all the surrounding towns.
The Pittula Festival is not just about gastronomy. In Piazza Municipio and along the streets of the historic center, there is a rotation of Salento folk music, traditional songs and dances, Christmas lights, stalls, and entertainment. A space is dedicated to children, with games, inflatables, and Christmas-themed activities. The festival falls during the winter solstice, between December 21 and 23, and represents the warmest and most well-attended moment of the year for Surano, capable of transforming a small village of a few hundred inhabitants into a lively meeting point for the entire Salento region.
Located between Poggiardo and the towns of the Salento hinterland, the Municipality of Surano preserves the authentic soul of southern Puglia, made up of folk traditions, genuine cuisine, and a strong sense of community. The Pittula Festival is its most genuine expression: a collective ritual that, on the eve of Christmas, unites memory, taste, and conviviality.
The 2026 Pittula Festival in Surano is scheduled for December 23, in keeping with the event's traditional date. In Piazza Municipio, the free distribution of hot pittule will return in the classic Salento variations (cauliflower, herring, pizzaiola), along with local wine, folk music, and entertainment for children.
The complete program for the 2026 edition, including times and guest artists, has not yet been released by the Municipality of Surano and will be announced closer to the event on the Municipality's official channels.
Surano can be reached by car via the SS275 (Maglie-Santa Maria di Leuca), taking the exit towards Poggiardo-Surano. The nearest train station is Maglie (Ferrovie del Sud Est), about 15 km away; the reference airport is Brindisi.
Admission to the festival is free, and the distribution of pittule is free of charge. Some gastronomic specialties and wine can be purchased at the stands.
The event takes place in winter and in the evening: we recommend dressing appropriately for the cold. The event is held in Piazza Municipio, in the town's historic center.
