About Artichoke Festival

Every spring, the village of Riotorto in the municipality of Piombino hosts one of the most beloved festivals in the Val di Cornia: the Artichoke Festival. Under the pine trees of the La Pinetina municipal park, between late April and early May, the food stalls serve Maremma-style tortelli, lasagna, and artichokes prepared fried, sautéed, or grilled, all paired with DOC wines from the Val di Cornia. Each evening features ballroom dancing with live music, culminating in the Artichoke footrace. A popular tradition now in its 55th year.

The Val di Cornia Artichoke Festival

In Riotorto, a hillside village in the municipality of Piombino in the province of Livorno, spring brings an event long-awaited by the entire Val di Cornia: the Artichoke Festival. Organized by the local Culture and Entertainment Association, the festival takes place in the greenery of the La Pinetina Municipal Park, a spacious and shaded area that welcomes thousands of visitors every year between the Easter holidays, Liberation Day, and May 1st. Now in its 55th edition, it is one of the longest-running and most deeply rooted festivals in the region.

The artichoke takes center stage

The heart of the event is, naturally, the artichoke, the quintessential seasonal vegetable of Maremma cuisine, served in countless ways at the food stalls. Among the first courses, the Maremma-style tortelli with artichokes stand out, along with lasagna, risotto, penne, and tagliatelle. The main courses feature the classic Tuscan grill—steak, pork ribs, sausage, and turkey—while side dishes highlight the artichoke fried, sautéed, grilled, or in salads. Everything is accompanied by DOC wines from the Val di Cornia, the expression of a territory dedicated to quality viticulture between the sea and the hills.

Music, dancing, and village atmosphere

The Artichoke Festival is not just about great food: every evening, and on festive afternoons, the park comes alive with ballroom dancing and live music, creating the convivial and family-friendly atmosphere that is the true spirit of Tuscan festivals. Children, families, and groups of friends find a place here to gather in the open air, among the pines of La Pinetina, far from the bustle of the coast.

The Artichoke footrace

Crowning the event is the traditional footrace, scheduled for the final Sunday of the festival: a road race open to athletes and walkers that winds through Riotorto and its countryside, the perfect opportunity to combine sport, nature, and celebration. The race is now an integral part of the Val di Cornia running calendar.

A Livorno tradition

More than half a century of history makes the Riotorto Artichoke Festival a landmark for those who want to experience the most authentic side of Tuscany—the world of small villages and local associations, where seasonal gastronomy becomes a reason for meeting and celebration. Visiting the festival means discovering the Val di Cornia beyond the beaches, amidst genuine flavors and heartfelt hospitality.
