The medieval re-enactment that restores Suvereto to its 13th-century glory
Suberetum Reditus in Medioevo is the grand historical re-enactment that every July transforms the village of Suvereto, in the province of Livorno, into an authentic medieval village. For two days, the cobbled alleys, small squares, and corners of the historic center of this Val di Cornia town come alive with knights, archers, falconers, ladies, musicians, jesters, and merchants, in an atmosphere that transports visitors back to the 13th century, considered Suvereto's golden age.
The event celebrates the period when Suvereto became one of the first free Communes of the Tuscan Maremma, thanks to the granting of the Charta Libertatis. It was during those years that the Town Hall, the Convent, and the Cloister of San Francesco were built at the foot of the imposing Rocca Aldobrandesca that still dominates the village. The re-enactment was created to showcase this historical and architectural heritage and to revive the medieval identity of one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy.
The Suberetum program is rich and spread throughout the village:
The convivial heart of the festival lies in the taverns and refreshment points set up in the historic center, where you can taste dishes inspired by medieval cuisine: the famous Wayfarer's Dinner, cheeses, spit-roasted pork, skewers, savory pies, and the essential spiced wine. At the entrance, you can exchange euros for period coins to make purchases and order at the taverns like authentic medieval locals, in an immersive experience that engages all the senses.
Suberetum is also the perfect opportunity to discover Suvereto, a jewel of the Etruscan Coast surrounded by olive groves and vineyards of the renowned Suvereto DOC terroir. The setting of the fortress, cloisters, and Romanesque churches makes this re-enactment one of the most evocative in the Tyrrhenian Tuscany, capable of blending spectacle, history, gastronomy, and folk traditions.
The 2026 edition of Suberetum Reditus in Medioevo will take place on Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, 2026, in the historic center of Suvereto. For two days, the Val di Cornia village will relive its glorious 13th century with historical costume parades, street performances by musicians and jesters, duels, falconers, medieval encampments, and a lively craft market.
There will be no shortage of taverns serving traditional medieval dishes, from the Wayfarer's Dinner to spiced wine, as well as activities dedicated to families and children. The dates are confirmed by the Ente Valorizzazione Suvereto and the official municipal calendar; the complete program with times, shows, and refreshment points will be made available on official channels in the weeks preceding the event.
By car: Take the Venturina Terme exit from the SS1 Aurelia, then follow signs for Suvereto (approx. 10 km). By train: Campiglia Marittima station on the Tyrrhenian line, then continue by bus or taxi. By plane: Pisa and Florence airports.
Free admission to the historic center. Drinks and food at the taverns and purchases at the market are paid for in period currency, which can be obtained at the exchange desks at the entrance. Reservations are recommended for the Wayfarer's Dinner and themed events.
Wear comfortable shoes for the village's cobbled streets. Evenings can be cool: bring a light sweater.
