The nocturnal barrel race in the medieval village of Suvereto
In the heart of the Val di Cornia, perched among the olive groves and vineyards of the Livorno Maremma, the medieval village of Suvereto (province of Livorno, Tuscany) hosts one of its most cherished traditions every summer: the Palio dell'Imperatore, the nocturnal edition of the famous barrel race. It takes place on the evening of August 13th, the eve of Ferragosto, when the narrow cobblestone streets of the historic center are transformed into an illuminated racecourse packed with spectators.
The Palio is dedicated to the memory of Henry VII of Luxembourg, Holy Roman Emperor, who died suddenly in 1313 in Buonconvento (province of Siena) during a military campaign intended to restore order among the Italian communes. According to tradition, his remains rested in the Ghibelline castle of Suvereto before being moved to the Cathedral of Pisa, and it is said that Dante Alighieri himself visited the village's Romanesque parish church to pay homage to the Emperor. This historical connection inspired the name of the August Palio.
The barrel race is a folkloric competition between teams representing the districts and hamlets of Suvereto. In pairs, the spingitori (pushers) lean against a wooden barrel weighing about 500kg and guide it as smoothly as possible along a challenging track filled with climbs, sharp turns, and uneven pavement. It takes more than just strength; it requires technique, balance, and teamwork. The challenge includes a presentation of the districts, semi-finals, and a final, where all teams race together over two laps to determine the winning district. The historic districts competing are Castello, San Lorenzo, Vallicciola, Borgo, San Francesco, Belvedere, and Forni.
Since 1994, the barrel race has had its own summer nocturnal version in the Palio dell'Imperatore, designed to welcome the thousands of tourists who flock to the Etruscan Coast and the Val di Cornia in August. The May race, the Palio di Santa Croce in honor of the patron saint, and the August event together form the double annual appointment that has made Suvereto a national benchmark: the Palio Nazionale delle Botti delle Cittร del Vino, established in 2007, was born from the Suvereto experience.
The Palio dell'Imperatore is more than just a race. The evening begins with the grand Palio dinner in the evocative Cloister of San Francesco, featuring wine tastings and typical Maremma dishes at affordable prices. This is followed by a parade of the Compagnia di Santa Croce flag-wavers and the Knights of Ildebrandino, building up to the race and the award ceremony for the winning district by the Mayor. It is a night that celebrates the identity of the Municipality of Suvereto and this authentic corner of Tuscany.
The 2026 Palio dell'Imperatore is scheduled for Thursday, August 13, 2026, in the historic center of Suvereto, on the eve of Ferragosto. The evening begins with the Palio dinner in the Cloister of San Francesco, featuring wine tastings and typical Maremma dishes; this is followed by performances, the presentation of the districts, and the semi-finals and final of the 500kg barrel race along the steep, cobblestone streets of the village. The evening concludes with the Mayor awarding the winning district.
