About Prugnolo Mushroom Festival

In Miratoio, a small hamlet of Pennabilli in the upper Valmarecchia, the Prugnolo Mushroom Festival returns on the last weekend of May. This rare and prized mushroom was considered a "food for princes" in the 16th century. Two days of celebration featuring gastronomy, music, outdoor sports, and family activities, at the foot of the Sasso Simone and Simoncello Natural Park. The stars are the traditional dishes of the Romagna region: tagliatelle with prugnolo, cascioni, and local specialties, in a village in the Rimini Apennines with free admission.

A festival dedicated to the "mushroom of princes"

The Prugnolo Mushroom Festival is one of the most cherished events in the upper Valmarecchia and takes place in Miratoio, a small hamlet in the Municipality of Pennabilli, in the province of Rimini, in Emilia-Romagna. The star is the prugnolo (Tricholoma georgii), also known as "spignolo", a rare and highly prized mushroom that grows in the hilly and mountainous areas of central Italy between April and May. As early as the 16th-century texts, it was described as a "food for princes", reserved for noble tables: even today, it is a rarity sought after by connoisseurs.

The village of Miratoio and the Sasso Simone and Simoncello Park

The festival is held at the foot of the Sasso Simone and Simoncello Natural Park, in an area of great landscape value on the border between Romagna, Marche, and Tuscany. The village of Miratoio, with its stone houses and paths winding through the woods, provides the backdrop for a celebration that is also an opportunity to rediscover the Rimini Apennines and its rural traditions. The event is organized by the association Nova Comunitas Miratorii, which involves the entire local community every year.

Gastronomy: tagliatelle with prugnolo and cascioni

The heart of the event are the food stalls, where you can taste typical dishes prepared with prugnolo mushrooms:

  • Tagliatelle with prugnolo, the true signature dish of the festival;
  • Cascioni (the typical Romagna crescioni) with prugnolo;
  • rabbit and other Apennine cuisine specialties;
  • desserts and local typical products.

Music, sports, and families

In addition to food, the festival offers a rich entertainment program: circus workshops for families, conferences dedicated to the Apennine territory, live music, DJ sets, and radio broadcasts liven up the evenings. Sunday is also dedicated to outdoor sports, with the Miratrail, a non-competitive walk and run along the park trails, and activities for children such as games, face painting, and an artisan market. A mix of taste, nature, and tradition that makes the Prugnolo Mushroom Festival an unmissable event at the end of May in Emilia-Romagna.
