The festival celebrating the prugnolo, the mushroom of princes, in the village of Miratoio
The Prugnolo Mushroom Festival is one of the most cherished events in the upper Valmarecchia and takes place in Miratoio, a small hamlet in the Municipality of Pennabilli, in the province of Rimini, in Emilia-Romagna. The star is the prugnolo (Tricholoma georgii), also known as "spignolo", a rare and highly prized mushroom that grows in the hilly and mountainous areas of central Italy between April and May. As early as the 16th-century texts, it was described as a "food for princes", reserved for noble tables: even today, it is a rarity sought after by connoisseurs.
The festival is held at the foot of the Sasso Simone and Simoncello Natural Park, in an area of great landscape value on the border between Romagna, Marche, and Tuscany. The village of Miratoio, with its stone houses and paths winding through the woods, provides the backdrop for a celebration that is also an opportunity to rediscover the Rimini Apennines and its rural traditions. The event is organized by the association Nova Comunitas Miratorii, which involves the entire local community every year.
The heart of the event are the food stalls, where you can taste typical dishes prepared with prugnolo mushrooms:
In addition to food, the festival offers a rich entertainment program: circus workshops for families, conferences dedicated to the Apennine territory, live music, DJ sets, and radio broadcasts liven up the evenings. Sunday is also dedicated to outdoor sports, with the Miratrail, a non-competitive walk and run along the park trails, and activities for children such as games, face painting, and an artisan market. A mix of taste, nature, and tradition that makes the Prugnolo Mushroom Festival an unmissable event at the end of May in Emilia-Romagna.
The 39th edition was held in the village of Miratoio with a two-day program. Saturday, May 30, opened at 3:00 PM with Circus for Families workshops, followed at 4:30 PM by the conference "Living and Re-living the Apennines"; from 7:30 PM, the food stalls opened with tagliatelle with prugnolo, accompanied by a live broadcast from Radio Studio Piรน, DJ sets, and entertainment. Sunday, May 31, at 9:30 AM, the Miratrail started, a non-competitive run and walk along the park trails, with family trekking and a treasure hunt; from 12:00 PM, the food stalls reopened, while the afternoon featured bike trial exhibitions, children's games, face painting, an artisan market, and live music with an orchestra.
