About Batanài tra le mura

One Sunday a month (and on major public holidays) the heart of Urbino transforms into a large open-air market. Along Corso Garibaldi and in Piazza San Francesco, within the walls of the ducal city, stalls of craftsmanship, antiques and modern design offer handmade objects, vinyl records, antique furniture, knick-knacks and gift ideas. An event curated by the Pro Loco of Urbino to bring residents and tourists back to stroll through the streets of the historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A market that lives within the walls of Urbino

Batanài tra le mura is the exhibition of craftsmanship, antiques and modern design that enlivens the historic center of Urbino, in the heart of the Province of Pesaro and Urbino, in the Marche region. The event takes place along Corso Garibaldi and in Piazza San Francesco, at the foot of the Ducal Palace, in one of the best-preserved Renaissance centers in Italy, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What does "batanài" mean

The name comes from the Urbino dialect: with the word "batanài", the people of Urbino refer to objects and knick-knacks considered not very useful, those trinkets that artisans and enthusiasts, with creativity and skilled hands, know how to bring back to life, giving them a new purpose. This is precisely the spirit of the market: rediscovering the value of things, through upcycling, vintage, and tradition.

What you can find at the stalls

Strolling among the exhibitors, you will find unique handmade objects, antique furniture and accessories, vinyl records, books, prints, vintage clothing and accessories, modern design items, hobby supplies, and many original gift ideas. Alongside the stalls, on market days, the historic center often offers open museums, shows, and entertainment that make the visit even more enjoyable.

An event that returns all year round

Organized by the Pro Loco of Urbino, Batanài tra le mura is not a single event but a series of events spread throughout the year: traditionally held on the first Sunday of each month and on major public holiday weekends (Easter, April 25th and May 1st long weekends, Christmas holidays). The calendar is designed to accompany the seasons and give visitors another good reason to visit the city of Raphael.

Why it's worth it

  • It takes place in the UNESCO historic center of Urbino, amidst Renaissance views and uphill alleys.
  • Free entry and a family atmosphere, perfect for a Sunday stroll.
  • An opportunity to combine antique and vintage shopping with a visit to the Ducal Palace and the National Gallery of the Marche.
