Three Sundays dedicated to Sogliano DOP Pit Cheese in the heart of Romagna
Perched on a hill between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennines, Sogliano al Rubicone (province of Forlì-Cesena, Emilia-Romagna) is universally known as the capital of pit cheese. For over fifty years, every autumn, the village dedicates its most important fair to this unique product: a cheese that is lowered and aged in characteristic tuff pits dug into the rock, where it matures for about three months before the traditional sfossatura (unearthing) in November.
The Pit Cheese Fair was born in 1974 on the initiative of the Pro Loco and over the decades has become a nationally renowned event. Pit cheese, considered a small treasure as early as the eighteenth century, received the recognition of Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) in 2009, confirming the deep bond between the product and the territory of Sogliano.
On all Sundays of the event, the historic center comes alive with stalls and stands where you can taste and buy DOP pit cheese along with other local specialties from Sogliano:
The fair is also a major cultural and entertainment event. During the three Sundays, the village hosts theatrical, musical, and recreational shows, concerts, conferences dedicated to cheese and local products, workshops, and free guided tours of the historic center and local museums. There is also an area dedicated to children with entertainment and traditional games, making the day suitable for the whole family. Admission to the fair is free, and the organization provides free parking and shuttle services.
The 51st Sogliano DOP Pit Cheese Fair is confirmed for the Sundays of November 22 and 29, and December 6, 2026. As tradition dictates, the historic center of Sogliano al Rubicone will transform into a large market dedicated to DOP pit cheese and local excellences, with tastings, themed dining, shows, conferences, workshops, and a children's area. Admission is free, as are parking and shuttle services.
Currently, the organization has announced the official dates but not yet the detailed program for the 2026 edition, which will be published in the weeks before the event. It is advisable to consult the official website and the Municipal Tourist Office for updates.
