About Porté Disné

Porté Disné is the most beloved traveling lunch in the Roero region: an 8-kilometer food and wine walk connecting Montà to Canale, in the province of Cuneo. Along country lanes and trails through the Rocche, participants carry their wicker baskets, stopping at various stations to sample traditional Piedmontese dishes and fine wines like Roero Arneis and Roero DOCG, all set to live folk music amidst the vineyard-covered hills of Roero. The event revives the ancient peasant tradition of bringing lunch to the fields.

A gourmet walk in the heart of the Roero

Porté Disné is one of the most iconic food and wine events in Piedmont: a true traveling lunch that winds for about 8 kilometers between the towns of Montà and Canale, in the heart of the Roero region, in the province of Cuneo. Walking through vineyards, woods, and the striking Rocche del Roero, participants discover one of the most fascinating wine landscapes in the region, now part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Vineyard Landscapes of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato.

The meaning of the name

The local dialect expression "porté disné" once referred to the act of bringing lunch to family members and laborers working in the fields during long days of toil. The event affectionately revives this ancient Roero peasant tradition, transforming it into a convivial, popular festival that unites the two towns and their local Pro Loco associations.

How it works

At the start in Piazza San Michele in Montà, each participant is given a wicker basket complete with a wine glass, tableware, cutlery, and a cloth napkin. You then proceed along country lanes and trails through the Rocche, stopping at various gastronomic stations set up in the countryside. Departures are staggered in groups to ensure everyone can enjoy the route at their own pace. The walk concludes in Canale, where the festivities continue with a final dance.

The flavors of the Roero

Each stop offers a traditional Piedmontese dish paired with local wines:

  • Bruschetta with lardo or tomato and Piedmontese appetizers
  • Agnolotti and traditional first courses
  • Grilled meats with seasonal side dishes
  • Selection of PDO cheeses from the province of Cuneo with Roero honey
  • Roero strawberries for the final dessert

Accompanying the tastings are the great wines of the territory: the white Roero Arneis and the red Roero DOCG made from Nebbiolo grapes, as well as Barbera and Nebbiolo d'Alba.

Music and atmosphere

The stops are enlivened by live folk music, which accompanies walkers and creates a cheerful, convivial atmosphere. Porté Disné is not just a simple tasting, but an experience that combines light exercise, landscape, gastronomy, and popular tradition, perfect for those who want to discover the Roero in an authentic way.

A spring appointment

Organized by the Porté Disné Association in collaboration with the Ecomuseo delle Rocche del Roero and the Pro Loco of Montà and Canale, the event is held every year at the end of May and has become a highly anticipated date for thousands of food and wine enthusiasts from all over Piedmont and beyond.
