About Monteu Roero Earth Market

Every first Sunday of the month, Piazza Roma in Monteu Roero hosts the Slow Food Earth Market. A dozen local producers from the Roero area bring raw milk goat cheeses, hazelnuts, Madernassa pears, honey, truffles, saffron, wines, and fresh pasta to the square. Officially joining the Slow Food network on May 3, 2026, it is a hub for short supply chains and slow tourism in the heart of this corner of the Province of Cuneo.

A farmers' market in the heart of Roero

The Monteu Roero Earth Market is the farmers' market of the Slow Food network that brings Piazza Roma to life every first Sunday of the month. Located in the center of the small town of Monteu Roero, in the Province of Cuneo, Piedmont, it features a dozen selected producers offering the most authentic products of this hilly territory between the Langhe and Roero, providing a direct experience from producer to consumer.

Local producers and products

The market gathers a dozen businesses from neighboring towns: Santo Stefano Roero, Guarene, Sommariva Perno, Pocapaglia, Montà d'Alba, Sanfrè, Poirino, and Pralormo. At the stalls, you will find a selection that highlights the biodiversity of the Roero region:

  • Raw milk goat cheeses and local beef
  • Madernassa pears (Ark of Taste product) and Ceresole d'Alba tench (Slow Food Presidium)
  • Hazelnuts, chestnuts, strawberries, and polenta cornmeal
  • Artisanal honey, jams, saffron, and truffles
  • Flour, bread, fresh pasta, wines, and artisanal cured meats

Short supply chains and slow tourism

The project was born from the synergy between the municipal administration of Monteu Roero and Slow Food Travel Roero, a slow tourism initiative that involves producers in farm visits, tastings, and hospitality. The idea, as coordinator Paolo Pertusio explained, is to offer an alternative made of authentic, personally selected producers, countering the "merchants disguised as farmers" found at generalist fairs. The journey began about a year before the official inauguration with a series of lead-up markets.

More than just shopping: village experiences

Every market Sunday, the village comes alive with side events: conscious shopping accompanied by a monthly short-supply-chain picnic, visits to the Monteu Roero castle and the "crutin" (traditional underground cellars), as well as storytelling and product quizzes. For those who want to dive deeper, there are farm visits and e-bike tours through the Roero hills. It is a great opportunity to build community and discover an authentic town in the Province of Cuneo.

Monteu Roero Earth Market — edition 2026

2026 marks the official entry of the Monteu Roero Earth Market into the Slow Food network, with the inauguration on May 3rd. Since then, every first Sunday of the month, Piazza Roma welcomes a dozen Roero producers with cheeses, fruit, honey, truffles, wines, and many experiences linked to slow tourism.

After a year of lead-up markets, the Monteu Roero Earth Market officially joined the Slow Food network on May 3, 2026. The first "full-scale" edition was held on Sunday, June 7, 2026, with about ten stalls and high-quality products from the Roero region. The market continues every first Sunday of the month, accompanied by initiatives to promote the territory.
