When the bells of the famous Troia Cathedral ring out on December 8th to celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the historic center of this Daunian village transforms into a festive courtyard. This is the day of the Pizz' Fritt' Festival, a celebration of fried pizza that has marked the start of the Christmas season in Troia, in the province of Foggia, for over two decades. Organized by the Pro Loco of Troia with the patronage of the Municipality, the event attracts families, curious visitors, and locals from across the Subappennino Dauno every year.
The heart of the festival is the Troian pizza fritta, a simple and delicious dough prepared according to traditional peasant recipes: the Pro Loco emphasizes the use of organic wheat flour and extra virgin olive oil from the hills surrounding the city. Fried to order and served hot in the early evening, these pizzas are the perfect excuse to rediscover the genuine flavors of Puglian 'cucina povera' while chatting in the square amidst the cozy atmosphere of a Daunian winter.
Running alongside the festival is the Solidarity Market, which accompanies the celebration from the early morning hours. Stalls selling handicrafts, Christmas decorations, nativity scenes, and crochet work are set up along the streets and squares of the historic center. This market carries a strong charitable purpose, designed to unite the community in the spirit of Christmas sharing. Thus, the day of the Immaculate Conception in Troia is enriched by a blend of gastronomy, craftsmanship, and social commitment.
The festival is also an excellent excuse to discover Troia, a small town in the Subappennino Dauno famous throughout Puglia for its Romanesque Cathedral and its extraordinary eleven-spoke rose window, one of the most famous in Italy. Strolling through the alleys of the festively decorated historic center, with its ice rink, holiday lights, and the events of the "Troia City of Christmas" program, makes for a complete experience that combines religious tradition, culture, and fine dining.
Tied to the Immaculate Conception, the Pizz' Fritt' Festival traditionally falls on December 8th and is part of the rich calendar of Christmas events in the Municipality of Troia. It is a moment eagerly awaited by the entire community, which renews the bond between faith, popular traditions, and the flavors of the Daunian territory every year.
The 2026 edition of the Pizz' Fritt' Festival in Troia has not yet been officially scheduled. Based on tradition, the event is expected to return for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in the historic center of the Daunian town, featuring the tasting of fried pizzas made with organic wheat flour and local extra virgin olive oil, along with the customary Solidarity Market. For updated dates and programs, we recommend following the channels of the Pro Loco of Troia.
