Interregional showcase of food, wine, crafts, and folklore from Alta Irpinia
The Festival of Festivals in Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, in the province of Avellino, is much more than a local fair: it is an interregional exhibition dedicated to gastronomy, artistic crafts, agriculture, and tourism in the so-called "Middle Lands," that Apennine crossroads where Campania meets Basilicata, Puglia, and Molise. Organized by the Pro Loco « Alta Irpinia - Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi APS », it is usually held in the second ten days of November and, according to the organizers, attracts over sixty to seventy thousand visitors over three days—numbers that make it one of the most important autumn events in inland Irpinia.
The stage for the event is the historic center of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi: alleys, arches, stone portals, and buildings rebuilt after the earthquake that struck Irpinia hard. Walking among the stands means crossing a town that knew how to get back on its feet and today showcases what it does best, from cheese to wood carving. The natural backdrop is the Irpinian plateau, with its chestnut forests and pastures where the Podolica cow is still raised.
The heart of the festival is the producers' stalls, which come not only from the towns of Alta Irpinia but also from neighboring regions. Among the delicacies that can be tasted and purchased:
Over the years, the Festival of Festivals has built an identity that goes beyond mere tasting. The program usually includes taste workshops led by producers and technicians, conferences, round tables, and debates on the future of inland areas, mountain agriculture, and the enhancement of villages. Alongside the food stalls, there is space for craft and artist exhibitions, with live demonstrations of artistic trades supported by regional trade associations.
The soundtrack of the three-day event is entrusted to folk and ethnic music, traditional dance groups, and itinerant bands that enliven squares and open spaces. Street performers and children's entertainment make the event suitable for families as well: it is a festival to be experienced while walking, with a plate in hand and the music changing at every corner.
During the event, the Pro Loco organizes guided tours to the symbolic places of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi and its surroundings: the Cathedral with its crypt, the Lombard Castle that dominates the town, the Convent of San Marco, and the famous Goleto Abbey, one of the most evocative monastic complexes in Southern Italy, reachable by shuttle service from the center. In recent years, the festival has also been connected to the historic train departing from Avellino along the Irpinian landscape line, an initiative that has sold out.
Those looking for an authentic festival, not one manufactured at a desk, will find in Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi an event that combines product quality, cultural density, and the warmth of hospitality. It is also the best time of the year to discover Alta Irpinia, an inland area of Campania often off the mass tourism circuits but rich in history, nature, and peasant wisdom. As the organizers repeat: you can arrive by car, camper, train, on foot, or trekking; the important thing is to arrive.
The Festival of Festivals returns to Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi (province of Avellino, Campania) from Friday, November 13 to Sunday, November 15, 2026, confirming its traditional placement in the second ten days of November. The historic center will host, as every year, the stands of producers from Alta Irpinia and neighboring regions, artisan stations, and stages dedicated to folk music.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco « Alta Irpinia - Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi APS » with the support of the municipal administration. The dates are currently known; the detailed program with times, taste workshops, conferences, and shows is usually released in the weeks immediately preceding the event through the official Pro Loco channels.
Those planning their trip can count from now on the consolidated structure of the review: tastings of Podolico caciocavallo, Bagnoli pecorino, Carmasciano, chestnuts, truffles, cured meats, honey, and wood-fired bread, accompanied by Irpinian wines, and guided tours of the Cathedral, the Lombard Castle, and the Goleto Abbey.
Historic center of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi (AV), with its hub in Piazza Umberto I and adjacent streets. The stands are spread along the pedestrian path of the village.
By car: from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the Lacedonia or Grottaminarda exit, then the SS 7 Ofantina towards Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi. From Salerno, you can take the Salerno-Avellino junction and continue on the Ofantina bis. During the event, the center is closed to traffic: it is best to leave the car in the peripheral parking lots and reach the stands on foot.
Access to the event and the performances in the square is free. You only pay for tastings at individual stands, product purchases, and some limited-capacity activities (taste workshops, historic train).
It takes place in November at altitude, on the Irpinian plateau: dress in layers and bring comfortable shoes for the village cobblestones. Saturday evening is the busiest time; to visit the stands calmly, it is better to arrive on Friday or Sunday morning.
