Christmas comes to life in the alleys of this ancient Daunian village

The Casalnuovo Monterotaro Living Nativity is one of the most cherished Christmas traditions in the Capitanata region of northern Puglia. Every year, in late December, the historic center of this small town in the province of Foggia turns into a grand open-air theater, where ancient stone streets become the natural backdrop for the re-enactment of the Nativity.
This event is more than just a sacred representation; it is a true journey into the past. The village alleys are adorned with straw, torches, and artisan stalls, recreating an evocative atmosphere where forgotten trades, workshops, shepherds, and scenes of daily life come alive, with every detail of costumes and sets carefully curated. Along the route, the public witnesses the birth of Christ and the key moments of the Gospel story, enriched by elements typical of the local Casalnuovo culture: ancient farming tasks, devotional songs, and traditional regional gastronomy.
What makes Casalnuovo Monterotaro unique is its link to Bourbon tradition, which intertwines with the identity of the Daunian village, setting this nativity apart from others. Stories, legends, and anecdotes passed down through time blend with Gospel passages, resulting in a re-enactment deeply rooted in the community's memory.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco De Rocca of Casalnuovo Monterotaro, in synergy with the SS. Pietro e Nicolรฒ Parish and under the patronage of the Municipality of Casalnuovo Monterotaro. The ARCI also plays an important role, working on integration and active participation for new residents, who are invited to take part in the scenes along the route. More than one hundred performers contribute to the success of the event, bringing the village to life for over a thousand visitors each year.
For Casalnuovo Monterotaro, the Living Nativity is much more than an event: it is a moment of collective identity that unites the entire community during the Christmas season and opens it up to visitors from across Puglia and neighboring regions.
The 2026 edition of the Casalnuovo Monterotaro Living Nativity has not yet been officially scheduled. Based on previous editions, the event is expected to take place during the Christmas period, in the streets of the historic center of the village in the province of Foggia. Information regarding dates, times, and the program will be updated as soon as they are announced by the organizers.
