About Casalnuovo Living Nativity

Every late December, the historic center of Casalnuovo Monterotaro, a small village in the Daunia region of Foggia province, transforms into a Bethlehem of yesteryear. Now in its ninth edition in 2025, the Living Nativity fills the narrow streets with over a hundred performers, artisan workshops, ancient trades, and a food and wine trail that blends Bourbon tradition with local identity. It is a free, evocative journey back in time that draws over a thousand visitors every year from the Capitanata area, the BAT province, and neighboring Basilicata and Molise.

A living nativity in the heart of Daunia

The Casalnuovo Monterotaro Living Nativity is one of the most cherished Christmas traditions in the Capitanata region of northern Puglia. Every year, in late December, the historic center of this small town in the province of Foggia turns into a grand open-air theater, where ancient stone streets become the natural backdrop for the re-enactment of the Nativity.

A journey back in time

This event is more than just a sacred representation; it is a true journey into the past. The village alleys are adorned with straw, torches, and artisan stalls, recreating an evocative atmosphere where forgotten trades, workshops, shepherds, and scenes of daily life come alive, with every detail of costumes and sets carefully curated. Along the route, the public witnesses the birth of Christ and the key moments of the Gospel story, enriched by elements typical of the local Casalnuovo culture: ancient farming tasks, devotional songs, and traditional regional gastronomy.

Between Bourbon tradition and local identity

What makes Casalnuovo Monterotaro unique is its link to Bourbon tradition, which intertwines with the identity of the Daunian village, setting this nativity apart from others. Stories, legends, and anecdotes passed down through time blend with Gospel passages, resulting in a re-enactment deeply rooted in the community's memory.

A community in action

The event is organized by the Pro Loco De Rocca of Casalnuovo Monterotaro, in synergy with the SS. Pietro e Nicolรฒ Parish and under the patronage of the Municipality of Casalnuovo Monterotaro. The ARCI also plays an important role, working on integration and active participation for new residents, who are invited to take part in the scenes along the route. More than one hundred performers contribute to the success of the event, bringing the village to life for over a thousand visitors each year.

A free event for everyone

  • Completely free admission
  • Itinerant route through the village's historic center
  • Tastings and local products along the food and wine trail
  • Suitable for families, children, and lovers of folk traditions

For Casalnuovo Monterotaro, the Living Nativity is much more than an event: it is a moment of collective identity that unites the entire community during the Christmas season and opens it up to visitors from across Puglia and neighboring regions.
