The December 8th Christmas market in the heart of Torremaggiore
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The San Nicola Markets are the event that officially kicks off the Christmas season every December 8th in Torremaggiore, a town in the Alto Tavoliere area of the province of Foggia, Puglia. On the day of the Immaculate Conception, the historic Via Nicola Fiani and the old town center fill with stalls, lights, and scents, drawing families and visitors from across the province. The event combines two typically Apulian spirits: the popular devotion to Saint Nicholas, the region's patron saint, and a calling for hospitality and community sharing.
The heart of the market consists of nearly fifty stalls set up by associations, parishes, and local volunteer groups. Along the route, you will find handicrafts, gift ideas, Christmas decorations, traditional sweets, local food products, and essential refreshment points serving mulled wine and gastronomic specialties. Many stalls have a charitable purpose: proceeds from sales support solidarity initiatives and the activities of the involved associations, giving the festival that "big heart of solidarity" which has become its hallmark.
The atmosphere is designed for everyone. Among the stalls, you will find children's games, entertainment, musical performances, and tastings, while Christmas lights and decorations frame an evening that, edition after edition, records record-breaking attendance. The market is part of a broader city Christmas program, which includes the Artistic Nativity Scene Exhibition held at the Castello Ducale De Sangro, an ice skating rink, rides, and live shows.
The markets were born around the celebrations for Saint Nicholas, a figure beloved throughout Puglia and Southern Italy. Organized by the community of the Mother Church of San Nicola together with the Confraternity of the Rosary, the event pairs the stalls with liturgical celebrations, songs dedicated to the saint, and community moments that continue to define the town's identity, from the days of the De Sangro Duchy to the Torremaggiore of today. For the Municipality of Torremaggiore, the event represents, as emphasized by the administration, a true cultural and social investment that makes the city more vibrant and welcoming during the holiday season.
