The December 8th fire ritual in San Severo

In the heart of winter, on the evening of December 8th, San Severo—a city in the Capitanata area of the Foggia province—celebrates one of its most cherished popular traditions: the great Immaculate Conception bonfire, known in the local dialect as 'a Cungèttë a Sanda N'zëvírë' (literally "the Immaculate Conception in San Severo"). The entire neighborhood gathers around the flames in a ritual that blends religious devotion, rural memory, and community celebration.
The bonfire is lit on Via Padre Matteo d'Agnone and serves as the highlight of the evening. It is more than just a large fire: it is surrounded by live music, food stalls featuring local products and hot drinks, and a pyrotechnic display that illuminates the city sky. The lighting of the pyre symbolically marks the start of the Christmas season in San Severo.
In 2025, the ritual was inscribed in the Apulia Region's Register of Fire Rituals, a recognition that confirms its historical and identity-based value. This inscription protects a collective practice passed down through generations and places it alongside other great Apulian traditions linked to the December 8th votive fires, known as fanòje or fanoje throughout the region.
The Immaculate Conception bonfires have their roots in ancient customs where young people and children would collect brushwood, straw, and firewood from house to house to build the pyre. As evening fell, the fire was lit, and the community gathered around the flames with songs, dances, and games. Beyond its spiritual and purifying function—the symbolic elimination of evil and winter spirits—it held a very practical value: the embers were collected in copper and brass braziers, often the only source of heat in homes during the cold months. In Apulian popular devotion, it is said that the bonfires also served to dry the clothes of the Baby Jesus.
Today, the tradition is preserved and renewed by the Associazione Terra dei Fuochi Città di San Severo, which organizes the event every year in collaboration with the parish, scout groups, and local neighborhood entities. The invitation to the citizens is to participate "to keep a shared memory alive and strengthen the sense of belonging" to the San Severo community.
