About Deliceto Living Nativity

Every year, in the days following Christmas, the historic center of Deliceto, nestled in the Monti Dauni of the Foggia province, transforms into a grand living nativity scene titled "Tu scendi dalle stelle". Around one hundred actors recreate an 18th-century Neapolitan nativity among alleys, artisan workshops, and taverns, while the Nativity scene comes to life in the evocative Grotto of Beato Felice da Corsano, the very place that inspired Saint Alphonsus Liguori to write the famous Christmas carol. A shuttle train takes visitors to the Sanctuary of the Consolazione.

One of Puglia's most beloved living nativities

The "Tu scendi dalle stelle" Living Nativity is one of the most renowned and well-attended Christmas events in the Daunian Subappennino. It takes place in Deliceto, a small village in the Province of Foggia, in the heart of the Monti Dauni and northern Puglia, overlooked by the Norman-Swabian castle of the Sangro family. Every year, immediately after Christmas, the entire historic center turns into a vast open-air stage, reconstructing an 18th-century Neapolitan nativity scene.

History and the bond with Saint Alphonsus

The event is rooted in a story of great spiritual significance. During Christmas 1744, while staying at the Sanctuary of the Consolazione in Deliceto, Saint Alphonsus Liguori composed the famous carol "Tu scendi dalle stelle", now one of the most sung Christmas hymns in the world. The Nativity scene is reconstructed inside the Grotto of Beato Felice da Corsano, located beneath the Sanctuary, a place that inextricably links the event to the memory of the carol.

The route and scenes

Visitors wander through the ancient alleys and squares of the village, where about one hundred actors—shepherds, housewives, seamstresses, and craftsmen—bring to life the workshops, taverns, and trades of yesteryear, recreating the "grand 18th-century Neapolitan nativity". The route culminates at the Nativity grotto, accessible via a charming shuttle train that connects the historic center to the Sanctuary of the Consolazione.

  • Reconstruction of ancient trades and artisan workshops
  • Food and wine tastings of local products along the route
  • Shuttle train ride to the Nativity Grotto
  • Guided tour of the Sanctuary of the Consolazione, home to the papier-mâché bust of the "Ecce Homo" attributed to Saint Gerard Majella

Organization and atmosphere

The event is organized by the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Deliceto, in collaboration with local entities such as the Comunità Mariana Oasi della Pace, the Gruppo Skarìa, and the Centro Ippico Scarano. Thanks to the evocative power of the setting and the attention to costumes, the Deliceto living nativity attracts thousands of visitors from all over Puglia and Italy every year, confirming its status as one of the hallmark Christmas events of the Monti Dauni.

Deliceto Living Nativity — edition 2026

The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers: the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Deliceto will publish the program in the weeks leading up to the event.

Following the highly successful 2025 edition, the "Tu scendi dalle stelle" Living Nativity is expected in Deliceto for the 2026 Christmas season as well. As per tradition, the event is expected to take place in the days immediately following Christmas in the village's historic center, with the Nativity reconstructed in the Grotto of Beato Felice da Corsano.
