The night of bonfires and purgatory souls in Orsara di Puglia
The «Fucacoste e Cocce Priatorje» is the signature event of Orsara di Puglia, a small village nestled in the Monti Dauni in the province of Foggia, in the heart of the Apennine Puglia region. The event takes place every year on the night of November 1st, All Saints' Day, and continues into the early hours of November 2nd, the Day of the Dead. The name, in the local Orsara dialect, translates to «bonfires and heads of purgatory»: two elements that encapsulate the deep meaning of this ritual.
Unlike Halloween, with which it shares only a few superficial similarities, the Orsara festival is a ritual of remembrance and welcoming the dead. According to popular belief, on the night between November 1st and 2nd, the souls of purgatory return among the living to visit their relatives and warm themselves before continuing their journey. This is why the people of Orsara light fires and pumpkins: to illuminate the path for the souls and guide them to the homes where they once lived. It is defined as «the night of light», not of darkness.
As evening falls, at the sound of the bells, about one hundred bonfires are lit simultaneously throughout the town. They are fueled by broom branches, a shrub that burns quickly and vanishes, symbolizing the connection between heaven and earth. The streets of the historic center fill with fire, fragrant smoke, and warmth: it is the most anticipated and spectacular moment of the festival.
During the event, the village is populated by thousands of carved pumpkins shaped like human faces, lit from within by candles and displayed along alleys, in windows, and on sills. These are the «cocce priatorje», the heads of purgatory, whose light guides the souls toward the homes they once inhabited.
Surrounding the central ritual is a rich program of activities: pumpkin carving workshops, guided tours of the village and the Abbey, the «Pumpkin Paths» trail, performances by street artists and bands, video mapping on the Abbey facade, the evocative nighttime Ghost Tour, and the procession of the Congregation of the Dead that departs late in the evening from the Church of San Nicola di Bari. There is no shortage of rustic, symbolic traditional food: the «grain of the dead» (boiled wheat with vincotto and pomegranate), potatoes, onions, eggs, and chestnuts, alongside street food stalls lining the streets.
Over the years, the «Fucacoste e Cocce Priatorje» has become a nationally renowned event, attracting thousands of visitors from all over Puglia and the rest of Italy. The festival is organized under the patronage of the Municipality of Orsara di Puglia and now represents one of the most well-known autumn rituals in the entire South of Italy.
On the night of November 1, 2026, Orsara di Puglia will once again experience its most iconic ritual. At the sound of the bells, about one hundred broom-branch bonfires will be lit simultaneously along the village streets, while thousands of cocce priatorje—pumpkins carved into faces—will illuminate alleys and windows to guide the souls of purgatory toward the homes of the living.
Surrounding the ritual, as is customary, there will be carving workshops, guided tours, the pumpkin trail, street artist performances, video mapping on the Abbey, the Ghost Tour, and the procession of the Congregation of the Dead, all accompanied by traditional rustic food and street food stalls.
Orsara di Puglia is located in the Monti Dauni, in the province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached via the A16 motorway (Candela exit) or from the state roads coming from Foggia and Bovino. On the day of the festival, the historic center is closed to traffic: we recommend arriving in the morning or early afternoon and parking in the designated areas at the entrance to the town.
Admission to the event is free and open to all. Some activities (guided tours, carving workshops, Ghost Tour, vineyard visits) may require mandatory booking.
Wear comfortable, warm clothing for the evening; choose shoes suitable for stone-paved alleys. Be sure to taste the rustic traditional dishes and local products of the Monti Dauni.
