The Arbëreshe patronal feast of Casalvecchio di Puglia

The Patronal Feast of Santa Maria delle Grazie and San Nicola is the most cherished event of the year in Casalvecchio di Puglia, a small village in the Daunian Sub-Apennines in the province of Foggia. Every year, around the third Sunday of May, the entire community gathers around its two patrons: the Madonna SS. delle Grazie, protector of the town, and Saint Nicholas of Myra, the co-patron. The streets of the historic center light up with festive illuminations, while solemn processions, brass bands, and firework displays mark two days of devotion and popular celebration.
The festival traditionally spans two days. The first day is dedicated to Santa Maria SS. delle Grazie: after the solemn mass, the ancient 18th-century statue of the Madonna—dressed in white with precious golden damask—is carried in procession through the festively decorated streets, accompanied by a brass band and greeted by fireworks. The second day celebrates San Nicola, with a new procession accompanying both effigies and band concerts that enliven the evening until the midnight fireworks.
Casalvecchio di Puglia is one of Italy's Arbëreshe villages: destroyed in 1461, the town was refounded by a group of Albanian refugees who arrived in Puglia after the Turkish invasion. Even today, its inhabitants preserve the language, music, gastronomy, and traditions of their Albanian origins, a heritage that makes their patronal feast unique. Recognized as one of the "Authentic Villages of Italy," Casalvecchio preserves within its urban fabric the Church of Saints Peter and Paul (18th century) and the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie.
The devotion of Casalvecchio is rooted in an ancient legend: a miraculous image of the Madonna, originating from Gildone, in the province of Campobasso, was said to have been found in a village well. Since then, a deep bond of faith has united the two communities, which still exchange visits today during their respective festivals in honor of the Madonna delle Grazie. The liturgical commemoration originally fell on July 2nd, but towards the end of the 19th century, the festival was moved to mid-May to avoid coinciding with the wheat harvest.
Organized by the Parish of Saints Peter and Paul with the support of the Municipality of Casalvecchio di Puglia, the festival is not just a religious moment but the main gathering occasion for the entire town and for the many emigrants who return to the village during these days. Blending the sacred and the profane, the Feast of Santa Maria delle Grazie tells the story of the most authentic soul of this corner of the Daunian Mountains, in Puglia.
The official calendar for the 2026 edition has not yet been released. As per tradition, the Feast of Santa Maria delle Grazie and San Nicola is expected to take place in May in the historic center of Casalvecchio di Puglia, with a solemn mass, the procession of the ancient statue of the Madonna, and celebrations in honor of San Nicola.
