The patron saint of San Marco la Catola: a blend of devotion, fairs, and tradition in the Monti Dauni

Saint Liberato the Martyr is the patron saint of San Marco la Catola, a small town of just under a thousand inhabitants nestled in the Monti Dauni, in the most inland and mountainous part of the province of Foggia. At over 680 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest villages in Puglia, the community gathers every summer to honor its protector with a festival that combines religious, civic, and popular dimensions. On the same occasion, the town also commemorates the Madonna delle Vittime, another devotion deeply rooted in local tradition.
The heart of the festivities is the solemn procession of the Saint, which winds through the alleys of the historic center in the afternoon, accompanied by the faithful, the clergy, and city officials. The statue of the patron is carried on shoulders through the streets of the village amidst prayers, hymns, and the participation of the entire community, in a moment of strong collective identity. In the evening, the celebration continues in the square with the traditional brass band concert, an unmissable staple of patronal feasts in Southern Italy that fills the town with music until late at night.
The morning is dedicated to the historic fair, featuring livestock exhibitions and the sale of agricultural, artisanal, and local products. It is the legacy of a time when the patronal feast coincided with one of the main commercial events of the year for the rural communities of the Subappennino Dauno: an opportunity to discover the flavors and knowledge of Daunia, from cheeses and cured meats to garden produce and local crafts.
The patronal feast effectively opens the summer celebration cycle: the following day, August 20th, San Marco la Catola hosts its most spectacular event, the Giostra della Jaletta. At the foot of the 15th-century Palazzo Ducale Pignatelli, riders from the town's districts compete by attempting to insert a pole ("a verij") into the hole of a bucket of water ("a jalett") suspended between two balconies, with scores varying based on the horse's gait. It is a medieval-style re-enactment unique to Puglia, transforming the religious feast into a grand event of folklore and community.
Experiencing the Feast of Saint Liberato is also an opportunity to discover San Marco la Catola, a member of the Borghi Autentici d'Italia association. Dominated by the Palazzo Ducale and its towers, the town offers glimpses of the Monti Dauni, the nearby Bosco di San Cristoforo, and panoramas that, on clear days, stretch as far as the Tremiti Islands and the Maiella. An ideal destination for those seeking the most authentic Puglia, far from the coasts and deeply connected to its traditions.
At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Liberato the Martyr have not yet been officially announced. Historically, the feast is celebrated in San Marco la Catola around August 19th, with the fair in the morning, the procession of the patron in the afternoon, and the brass band concert in the evening, followed on August 20th by the Giostra della Jaletta.
The detailed program is usually released by the Municipality and the Parish in the weeks leading up to the event: this page will be updated as soon as official information regarding the 2026 edition is published.
