A tradition of devotion on July 16th in the heart of the Alto Tavoliere, Foggia

Every year on July 16th, the day the Church celebrates the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, the town of Torremaggiore, in the Province of Foggia and the heart of Puglia, renews its Madonna del Carmine Festival. It is a strictly religious occasion that marks the summer in the Capitanata region, bringing the faithful together at the historic Chiesa del Carmine, a key devotional landmark in the town center.
The bond between the festival and its venue is profound. The church, dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine and Our Lady of Sorrows, dates back to the 18th century: it was Prince Raimondo De Sangro, feudal lord and Duke of Torremaggiore, who donated the land where the building was erected, along with an adjoining monastery for Carmelite friars. The order's presence ended in 1809 following the suppression of the convent; in 1836, the church passed to the Confraternity of Death and Prayer, whose stone coat of arms can still be seen on the entrance portal. The Baroque facade is embellished with four statues flanking the acroterion, representing the three theological virtues and one cardinal virtue.
The festival is concentrated entirely on July 16th. The rhythm is one of popular devotion: holy masses are held throughout the day, morning and evening, to allow the entire community to participate. The highlight is the solemn evening procession, when the venerated image of the Madonna del Carmine is carried through the town streets, accompanied by the faithful, the confraternity, and the traditional religious spirit of the Tavoliere towns.
Organization is entrusted to the Maria SS. del Carmelo Festival Committee of Torremaggiore, which oversees the liturgical celebrations each year in coordination with the parish. The Chiesa del Carmine now falls under the Parish of Santa Maria della Strada, and the community venerates the Madonna del Carmine on July 16th and Our Lady of Sorrows on Good Friday, reflecting a Marian devotion that spans the entire liturgical year.
More than a spectacular event, the Madonna del Carmine Festival is an intimate and identity-defining occasion: a way for the community to come together, preserve the memory of a building linked to the De Sangro family, and renew a cult that has been rooted in the Municipality of Torremaggiore for centuries. For those visiting the Alto Tavoliere of Foggia in mid-July, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic tradition, far from the major tourist circuits.
