The patron saint festival of Serracapriola, blending faith, the Santa Rosalia Fair, and the Palio delle Contrade
The Patronal Feast of Saint Mercurius the Martyr is the main event of the year for Serracapriola, a village in the Alto Tavoliere area of the Province of Foggia, on the northern border of Puglia with Molise. Every year, in the first days of September, the entire town mobilizes to honor its co-patron saint in a celebration that blends religious devotion with popular and civic traditions, drawing back many local emigrants who return specifically for the occasion.
According to tradition, Saint Mercurius of Caesarea was a Christian soldier who lived under the emperors Decius and Valerian. After revealing his faith during the persecutions, he suffered martyrdom in Cappadocia, where he was beheaded. The local community originally venerated him on November 25th, but in 1815, the date was moved to early September for reasons related to the agricultural calendar and the milder weather of late summer, a time when farming life gave way to festivities.
For centuries, the religious festival has been accompanied by a major popular tradition: the Santa Rosalia Fair, established as early as the 17th century and originally called the San Berardino Fair, before taking its current name in 1946. Every September 4th, the main street of the town fills with merchants and artisans from neighboring areas, displaying all kinds of goods: agricultural tools, animals, local food products, sweets, household items, and ceramics. It is one of the most vibrant and characteristic moments of the festival.
The festivities traditionally open with the sound of firecrackers in the morning, while liturgical rites take place in the church of Santa Maria. During the Solemn Mass, the municipal administration and the festival committee present the silver palm and crown to the Saint, symbols of martyrdom and the devotion of the faithful. The heart of the festival remains the procession of the Saint's urn through the streets of the historic center, followed in the evening by concerts from renowned marching bands and the fireworks display that closes the festivities.
Crowning the week is the Palio delle Contrade, a thrilling competition that sees nine local districts compete with their own colors and jockeys. The day includes the blessing of the donkeys and jockeys by the parish priest in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, a historical pageant in costume along Corso Garibaldi, falconry displays, and an evening of music with fireworks. The donkey race, contested by the districts, turns the center of Serracapriola into a stage of colors, drums, and ancient neighborhood rivalries.
Between the sacred and the profane, the Feast of Saint Mercurius tells the deep identity of this corner of Puglia: popular faith, attachment to one's roots, and the sense of community that holds the village of Serracapriola together. It is also an ideal opportunity to discover the historic center, local gastronomy, and the landscape of the Alto Tavoliere, just a stone's throw from the Gargano.
For 2026, the community of Serracapriola is preparing to renew its devotion to its patron saint, Saint Mercurius the Martyr. The date of the main day, September 5, 2026, was made official by the festival committee at the end of the Saint Fortunatus festival in early June. The detailed program, including liturgical appointments, the names of the orchestras and bands, the procession schedule, and the date of the Palio delle Contrade, will be released by the Municipality and the committee in the weeks leading up to the event.
Serracapriola is located in the Alto Tavoliere, in the Province of Foggia, near the border with Molise. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway (Poggio Imperiale-Lesina or Termoli exits) and the SS16 Adriatica state road. The most convenient train station is Chieuti-Serracapriola on the Adriatic line, with bus connections to the town center.
The festival traditionally takes place from September 4th to 6th, with September 5th being the main day; the Palio delle Contrade is held on the following Sunday. Access to the events in the square and the fair is free.
It is advisable to arrive in the morning to experience the Santa Rosalia Fair and secure a spot for the evening procession and fireworks. During the festival days, the historic center is partially closed to traffic: we recommend parking in areas outside the village.
