The patronal feast of Casalnuovo Monterotaro, in the heart of the Daunian Mountains
The Maria SS. della Rocca Festival is the most important event of the year for Casalnuovo Monterotaro, a medieval village in the Daunian Subappennine perched on the Daunian Mountains, in the province of Foggia (Apulia). Every summer, the community gathers around the venerated effigy of the Madonna and Child, the town's patron saint, in a celebration that weaves together religious devotion, music, and conviviality, marking the most anticipated moment of the entire season.
The devotion has its roots in the ancient Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria de Rocca, founded between the 12th and 13th centuries near the Fortore River. When the inhabitants abandoned the fortified settlement of Mons Rotarius to found the current Casalnuovo, the cult of the Madonna della Rocca was transferred to the new town. Starting in 1656, the locals built, with popular contributions, the Church of Santa Maria della Rocca, completed in 1732, where the fine statue of the Virgin and Child, dressed in white and enriched with precious gold damask, still stands on the high altar today.
According to a deep-rooted custom, on the last Sunday of April each year, the statue is moved from its church to the Parish Church of SS. Pietro e Nicolò, in the center of the village, where it remains exposed to the veneration of the faithful until September 12th. It is from this church that the solemn procession begins on Ferragosto (August 15th).
The celebrations take place over several days around August 15th. The novena of preparation accompanies the faithful from August 6th to 14th; on Ferragosto, the statue is carried on the shoulders of devotees who take turns along the route, in a procession that crosses the town streets decorated with splendid illuminations. Civil festivities continue with:
Until the 1960s, the festival took place in May; it was moved to mid-August in the early 1970s to allow for the return and participation of emigrants, for whom this event remains a powerful moment of returning to their roots. Even today, the Maria SS. della Rocca Festival is much more than a religious recurrence: it is the occasion when the entire community of Casalnuovo Monterotaro comes together, amidst faith, popular tradition, and hospitality, in the evocative setting of the Daunian Mountains.
The Maria SS. della Rocca Festival 2026 will confirm the usual mid-August calendar in Casalnuovo Monterotaro, in the Daunian Mountains. The novena will accompany the faithful from August 6th to 14th; on August 15th, the day of Ferragosto, the solemn procession of the venerated statue of the Madonna and Child will take place along the streets of the village illuminated by lights, while on August 16th, civil festivities will continue with music in Piazza Plebiscito and the midnight fireworks display in Largo Trieste. The detailed program with musical guests will be released in the weeks preceding the festival by the organizing committee.
The celebrations are concentrated in the historic center of Casalnuovo Monterotaro (FG), between the Parish Church of SS. Pietro e Nicolò, Piazza Plebiscito, and Largo Trieste. The procession crosses the main streets of the village.
By car: Casalnuovo Monterotaro can be reached from the SS16 or the A14 motorway (Poggio Imperiale / San Severo exit), heading up towards the Daunian Mountains. The nearest train station is San Severo, on the Adriatic line, from which you can continue by bus or car. The reference airport is Bari-Palese.
The festival is held every year in mid-August, with the highlight on the 15th (Ferragosto) and festivities continuing on the 16th. The novena is celebrated from August 6th to 14th.
