The Ferragosto triduum in honor of the Patron Saint of Lucera
The Santa Maria Assunta Patronal Feast is the beating heart of summer in Lucera, an art city in the Daunia region of the Province of Foggia. Every year, around the Ferragosto holiday, the entire community gathers around its Patron Saint in a celebration that blends centuries-old faith, popular tradition, and grand spectacle. It is much more than a religious feast: it is the moment when Lucerini living in Italy and abroad return home, and when the historic center fills with lights, music, and people until late at night.
The core of the festival is the mid-August triduum. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, a splendid example of Angevin Gothic architecture, becomes the spiritual center of the celebrations, hosting novenas, holy masses, and the solemn Pontifical Mass on Ferragosto. On August 14th, brass bands parade through the streets of the center and the neighborhoods in the morning, while in the evening, various bands perform simultaneously in the squares of the historic center, creating a true traveling musical circuit. On the night between the 14th and 15th, the moving Serenade to Mary is renewed. On August 15th, the day of the Assumption, the liturgy is accompanied by a major evening concert, while on August 16th, the solemn procession of the Patron Saint's statue winds through the traditional city route.
The scenographic dimension is part of the festival's identity. The switching on of the luminaries in Piazza Duomo officially kicks off the festivities, with traditional light architectures framing the Cathedral. Not to be missed is the Fire at the Castle pyrotechnic show, which illuminates the majestic Swabian-Angevin Fortress, one of the largest in Europe. The evenings of the triduum conclude with firework displays accompanying the concerts in Piazza Matteotti.
The Lucera festival preserves ancient and deeply felt rites, such as the symbolic handing over of the city keys to the Patron Saint. Surrounding the religious core are historical re-enactments, a medieval village, neighborhood life, and long evenings in the square. A mosaic that makes the Santa Maria Assunta Patronal Feast one of the strongest identity-defining events in the Capitanata region, capable of uniting generations under the same sky of lights.
For 2026, the Lucera Patronal Feast confirms its most beloved formula, with a long lead-up under the title "Waiting for Santa Maria" and the central triduum of August 14th, 15th, and 16th. The most anticipated moment is the concert by Sal Da Vinci, winner of the last Sanremo Festival, scheduled for August 15th. Among the year's novelties, the evening of August 16th brings a competition between pyrotechnic companies with public voting via the Committee's social channels. The event is organized by the Lucera 2026 Patronal Feast Committee, chaired by Francesco Finizio, under the patronage of the City of Lucera.
Further details of the triduum program will be communicated by the Committee in the weeks preceding the festival.
Lucera is located about 20 km from Foggia. By car: A14 motorway exit Foggia, then SS17 towards Lucera. By train: Foggia station, then bus connections to Lucera.
Events are concentrated in the historic center: Piazza Duomo (in front of the Cathedral), Piazza Matteotti, Piazza Gramsci, Piazza della Repubblica, and the Swabian-Angevin Fortress (Villa Comunale).
Religious celebrations, concerts in the square, and firework displays are free of charge.
The center is very crowded during the triduum evenings: it is advisable to arrive early and park in areas outside the historic center. August is hot: water and light clothing are recommended.
