The solemn autumn procession in the Libera district of San Severo

Within the tapestry of religious festivals in San Severo, a city in the Alta Capitanata area of the Province of Foggia (Puglia), the Procession of Maria SS. della Libera holds a special place. Promoted by the Maria SS. della Libera e San Sebastiano Parish on Via Francesco D'Alfonso, the celebration gives voice to the district's devotion to the Virgin, venerated under the ancient title of "Libera" (the Liberator), a title cherished by many communities across Southern Italy.
The cult of Maria Santissima della Libera is rooted in centuries-old tradition: the Virgin is invoked as a liberator and protector, and her title is linked to the history of numerous sanctuaries in Southern Italy, from the Gargano to Campania. In San Severo, this devotion is expressed through an autumn festival that, despite its local and parochial scale, keeps the identity of the neighborhood and the bond between generations of the faithful alive.
The highlight is the solemn procession which, following the liturgical celebrations, carries the statue of the Madonna through the streets of the district. The procession winds its way accompanied by sacred hymns, the prayers of the faithful, and the notes of the brass band, amidst decorated houses and festive illuminations. The moments when the statue leaves and returns to the parish church are marked by the greatest popular participation, with the community gathered around the Marian image.
The celebration of the Libera should be distinguished from the grand Festa del Soccorso, the patronal feast of San Severo held in May, famous for its thunderous "batterie" fireworks and the "fujenti" runners, as well as the nearby Festa del Rosario in October. This is an autonomous devotion, an expression of the popular piety of a specific city district, which renews its appointment with faith every year.
As the capital of the Alta Capitanata and an important center in the Puglian hinterland, San Severo is known for its rich calendar of religious and civil festivals, where confraternities, committees, and parishes keep ancient customs alive. The Procession of the Libera is part of this intangible heritage, offering residents and visitors the chance to experience an authentic aspect of the spirituality and popular culture of the Municipality of San Severo.
The 2026 edition of the Procession of Maria SS. della Libera in San Severo does not yet have official dates. The district's devotion, animated by the Maria SS. della Libera e San Sebastiano Parish, traditionally places the festival in the month of October, with liturgical celebrations and the solemn procession of the Marian statue. The detailed program will be communicated by the parish closer to the event.
The celebrations take place at the Maria SS. della Libera e San Sebastiano Parish, located at Via Francesco D'Alfonso 87, in San Severo (FG). The procession winds through the streets of the surrounding district.
San Severo is accessible by train along the Adriatic line (San Severo station) and by car via the A14 motorway, taking the San Severo exit. The city is just a few kilometers from the motorway toll booth.
Participation in the celebrations and the procession is free and open to all.
