The patronal festival of Castelnuovo della Daunia, blending Marian devotion with a historic livestock and goods fair
The Patronal Festival in honor of the Madonna della Murgia and Saint Placidus the Abbot is the most anticipated event of the year in Castelnuovo della Daunia, a small village in the Daunian Subapennine in the province of Foggia, in the heart of northern Puglia. Every year, on September 15th and 16th, the town gathers around the venerated Marian image for days that blend religious devotion, rural tradition, and popular celebration.
The cult of the Madonna della Murgia has roots in an ancient tradition. Legend tells of the miraculous discovery of an 8th-century Marian icon, saved from Byzantine iconoclasm and brought to light at a site marked by a luminous boulder, where a chapel was built around the year 1000. The devotion later found its home in the Mother Church, dedicated to Mary Most Holy of the Murgia, whose construction dates back to 1199.
The festivities are preceded by the solemn Novena to the Madonna della Murgia, featuring the Holy Rosary and Holy Mass in the days leading up to the feast. The highlight is the Solemn Holy Mass on September 15th, featuring the evocative ritual of the Mayor handing over the city keys to the Virgin, followed by a procession through the town streets accompanied by flag-wavers. September 16th is dedicated to Saint Placidus the Abbot, with Mass and a procession accompanied by brass bands.
One of the most characteristic elements of the festival is the historic Livestock and Goods Fair, which reached its 197th edition in 2025. A symbol of the rural soul of the Monti Dauni, the fair enlivens the town center from the early hours of September 15th, with stalls, local products, and morning musical performances throughout the village.
The evenings light up in Piazza Plebiscito with concerts, cabaret shows, and the grand brass band concert, a staple of Southern Italian festive tradition. In past editions, the festival has hosted well-known names in Italian music. The grand finale is entrusted to traditional fireworks, which illuminate the Monti Dauni sky at midnight, closing two days of authentic community celebration.
The Patronal Festival in honor of the Madonna della Murgia and Saint Placidus the Abbot returns to Castelnuovo della Daunia on September 15th and 16th, 2026, confirming the fixed date that draws faithful and visitors to the Monti Dauni village in the province of Foggia every year.
The full program for the 2026 edition has not yet been announced. As is customary, the festivities will include the solemn Novena, Holy Mass, and the procession with the ritual of handing over the city keys to the Virgin, the historic Livestock and Goods Fair, brass band concerts in Piazza Plebiscito, and traditional fireworks to close the event. The detailed calendar will be released by the Municipality of Castelnuovo della Daunia and the festival committee closer to the event.
Castelnuovo della Daunia can be reached by car via the A14 motorway (exit Poggio Imperiale or San Severo), continuing towards the interior of the Monti Dauni; the nearest train station is San Severo, on the Bologna-Bari line.
