The festival of the Vico-style paposcia, featuring wood-fired ovens, music, and Gargano traditions
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Paposcia Fest is the annual event held on December 26th in Vico del Gargano to celebrate one of the region's most iconic products: the paposcia vichese. Organized by the Paposcia Fest Association with the support of the Municipality of Vico del Gargano, the event fires up the ovens at the Carlo Hintermann Municipal Amphitheatre, turning the village into a grand celebration of flavor, tradition, and conviviality.
Paposcia is an elongated, flattened bread-focaccia; its name stems from the word pantofola (slipper), inspired by its unique shape. It originated in the rural kitchens of the Gargano, where leftover bread dough was baked in the cooling ovens to avoid waste. While the first documented evidence dates back to the 16th century, its roots lie deep in the local artisan and peasant traditions. Stuffed with local delicacies—from stracciatella cheese to Gargano olive oil—the paposcia is now a true gastronomic excellence, officially recognized with the De.Co. (Municipal Designation) status, following strict guidelines established by a committee of local pizza makers and bakers.
The first edition in 2022, then known as Paposcia Winter Fest, drew over 7,000 visitors in a single day. The following year, moving to a larger venue, attendance exceeded 15,000. With each edition, Paposcia Fest has become one of the most anticipated winter food events in the Gargano, establishing Vico del Gargano as a premier destination for a day filled with fine food and entertainment.
The program combines gastronomy, folk culture, entertainment, and music. The day kicks off in the morning with the firing of the ovens and masterclasses dedicated to the history and preparation of the paposcia. This is followed by brunch, live cooking shows, and pairings with other local specialties. Local restaurants and pizzerias take turns at the ovens, preparing the paposcia according to traditional recipes. The afternoon is dedicated to families and children, while the evening features DJ sets, live shows, and concerts until the close.
Ranked among the 'Most Beautiful Villages in Italy' and known as the 'Village of Love' for its famous 'Vicolo del Bacio' (Kiss Alley), Vico del Gargano provides a stunning backdrop for the Paposcia Fest, with its medieval alleys, churches, and views over the Gargano National Park. The event is part of the town's vibrant Christmas calendar in the province of Foggia and offers an ideal opportunity to discover the most authentic side of Puglia, even in winter.
The 2026 edition of Paposcia Fest has not yet been officially announced by the Paposcia Fest Association. Based on previous editions, the festival is expected to return to Vico del Gargano around December 26th, during the Christmas season, with its traditional day dedicated to the paposcia vichese, blending gastronomy, tradition, and music. Dates, the program, and the line-up will be communicated in the weeks preceding the event: this page will be updated as soon as official information becomes available.
Vico del Gargano can be reached by car via the A14 motorway (Poggio Imperiale or San Severo exits), following signs for the Gargano. The nearest train station is in Foggia, which is connected to the village by local bus services. The event takes place at the Carlo Hintermann Municipal Amphitheatre.
Traditionally held on December 26th (St. Stephen's Day), from morning until evening.
We recommend wearing warm winter clothing and comfortable shoes for walking through the historic center's alleys. Paposcia tastings are available for purchase at the food stalls; entry to the event area is free.
