The Gargano patronal feast: a blend of faith, music, and tradition
In the heart of the Gargano, the small town of Carpino (Province of Foggia, Puglia) experiences its most intense moment in mid-August, when the entire community comes together for the Patronal Feast in honor of San Rocco Pellegrino and Maria Santissima Assunta. It is a celebration that unites the religious and civil spheres, ancient devotion and the joy of coming together, in a village that fills up in summer with emigrants returning for the occasion and visitors drawn by the atmosphere of the Gargano.
San Rocco Pellegrino, invoked for centuries as a protector against disease, and Maria Santissima Assunta are the two patrons to whom Carpino entrusts its faith. The liturgical calendar revolves around the Solemnity of the Assumption on August 15th and the feast of San Rocco on August 16th: solemn masses, celebrations in the mother church, and the evocative procession of the saints' statues carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center mark the days, accompanied by the ringing of bells and the heartfelt participation of the faithful.
Alongside the religious rites, the civil festival transforms the town into an open-air stage. Artistic illuminations light up the main street and squares, the brass band concert offers a traditional repertoire of popular and sacred music, while Piazza del Popolo hosts major evening concerts that are free and highly anticipated. The festivities conclude with the inevitable fireworks displays, with pyrotechnics reflecting in the Gargano sky.
The festival is also an opportunity to rediscover local cuisine: the food stalls are filled with typical local products, from extra virgin olive oil to meat and cheese specialties, and traditional desserts. Carpino, after all, is famous throughout Italy for its folk music and the tarantella del Gargano, a heritage guarded by the legendary Cantori di Carpino: a spirit that resurfaces during the days of the patronal feast.
The patronal feast of San Rocco represents one of the premier summer events not only for the town of Carpino but for the entire Gargano. Thanks to the commitment of the Pro Loco of Carpino and the municipal administration, the event manages to combine tradition with big names in Italian music every year, attracting audiences from all over the Province of Foggia and neighboring regions.
The 2026 patronal festivities in Carpino will take place from August 16th to 19th, in the spirit of tradition and great music. The most anticipated moment is the free concert by Noemi, scheduled for August 19th in Piazza del Popolo: the Roman singer, one of the most appreciated artists on the national scene, will be the star of the Carpino summer.
The concert is part of the traditional programming of the festivities in honor of San Rocco Pellegrino and Maria Santissima Assunta, organized by the Pro Loco of Carpino together with the municipal administration. As every year, the civil part of the festival accompanies the religious celebrations, the processions with the statues of the patrons, the artistic illuminations, and the fireworks displays that accompany the heart of the Gargano during the August nights.
August 19th - Piazza del Popolo: concert by Noemi, free admission.
During the days of August 16-19, traditional events will also take place, including solemn masses, the procession of the statues of San Rocco and Maria SS Assunta, the brass band concert, illuminations, and fireworks. The full program is published by the Pro Loco of Carpino shortly before the event.
Carpino is located in the northern Gargano, in the Province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached from the A14 motorway (Poggio Imperiale or Foggia exit) by continuing along the roads that climb the Gargano promontory. The nearest useful train station is San Severo, which is connected by local bus lines.
The festivities take place in mid-August, around the anniversaries of the Assumption (August 15th) and San Rocco (August 16th).
Religious celebrations, processions, and concerts in Piazza del Popolo are free to attend.
The center is crowded during the festival days: it is advisable to arrive early for evening concerts and to book accommodation well in advance, as August is high season in the Gargano.
