Porchetta, torcinelli, and grilled meats in a Gargano village overlooking Lake Varano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Meat and Porchetta Festival is one of the most anticipated evenings of the summer in Cagnano Varano, a town in the province of Foggia nestled on the hills overlooking Lake Varano, the largest coastal lake in Italy, located within the Gargano National Park. Every year in mid-August, the town center transforms into a large open-air dining room where grilled meat, porchetta, and torcinelli take center stage in a popular celebration that attracts residents, returning emigrants, and tourists vacationing in the Gargano.
The festival menu is a tribute to the rural and pastoral traditions of the Capitanata region. The chefs prepare simple and hearty dishes:
Everything is served at affordable prices at the stalls set up for the occasion, in an atmosphere of conviviality that is the true hallmark of village festivals.
The event is now a classic of the Cagnano summer: in 2024, it reached its ninth edition, confirming its deep roots in the community. The event was born thanks to the commitment of the San Francesco d'Assisi Parish and local associations, and in recent years, it has become a full-fledged part of the Cagnano d'Estate program, the series of events promoted by the Municipal Administration, the Pro Loco, and local associations.
Attending the festival is also an opportunity to discover one of the most evocative villages in the northern Gargano. Cagnano Varano stands at an altitude of about 175 meters, overlooking the expanse of Lake Varano. The town preserves a historic center gathered around the Palazzo Baronale and the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà , while just a few kilometers away is the rock-hewn Sanctuary of the Grotta di San Michele, one of the oldest pilgrimage sites on the promontory. The festival thus becomes a pretext to combine good food, tradition, and landscape in one of the most authentic areas of Puglia.
The Meat and Porchetta Festival is traditionally held in the first half of August, during the evening, in the town squares. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: it is recommended to follow the channels of the Municipality of Cagnano Varano and the Pro Loco for the updated program.
The Meat and Porchetta Festival is expected to return in the summer of 2026 to Cagnano Varano, confirming its status as a traditional appointment in the Gargano calendar. At the moment, official dates and the program have not yet been announced.
As in previous editions, an evening dedicated to porchetta, grilled meat, torcinelli, and local products is expected, with food stalls set up in the town center. To find out the date and details, it is best to follow the official channels of the Municipality of Cagnano Varano and the Pro Loco.
Cagnano Varano is located in the northern Gargano, in the province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached from the Poggio Imperiale exit of the A14 motorway and then via the SS693 towards Lake Varano. The nearest train station is San Severo, connected to the town by local bus lines.
The festival is held in the town center: in past editions, the stalls were set up in Piazzetta Bellavista and, more recently, in the square in front of the Town Hall, with traffic restrictions on the affected streets.
Admission is free, and you only pay for what you consume at the stalls. It is advisable to arrive early to avoid queues at the food points during peak hours. In the summer months, it is useful to book accommodation in advance, given the tourist influx to the Gargano.
