About Mussel Festival

The Mussel Festival of Ischitella is the mid-summer gastronomic event celebrating the most beloved mollusc of the Gargano coast. In the heart of this Gargano village in the province of Foggia, stalls offer fresh mussels prepared in every way—marinated, au gratin, or roasted—accompanied by frise, taralli, and typical Apulian products. With brass band concerts, pizzica and taranta music, craft markets, and fireworks, it is a village festival designed for all ages.

The Mussel Festival of Ischitella

When summer reaches its peak, Ischitella—one of the most charming villages in the Gargano, in the province of Foggia—dedicates an entire evening to the mussel, the true queen of Apulian coastal cuisine. The Mussel Festival has become a mid-summer staple: a traditional event that draws residents, vacationers, and curious visitors along the streets of the historic center, transformed for the occasion into a grand journey of taste and celebration.

The mussel, the absolute star

The mollusc is served in all its traditional Gargano variations: marinated, simply opened in its own juice scented with garlic and parsley; au gratin in the oven with breadcrumbs and aromatic herbs; or roasted over embers. Alongside the mussel stalls, vendors offer other local specialties—topped frise, taralli, and pastries like pasticciotti—for a complete journey through the authentic flavors of Puglia. It is the ideal opportunity to discover a product that combines the freshness of the Gargano sea with the simplicity of village cooking.

Music, folklore, and fireworks

The festival is not just about gastronomy. The evening comes alive with brass band concerts and folk music, while folkloric shows bring traditional Salento dances to the square, with pizzica and taranta rhythms sweeping the audience off their feet. There are also local craft markets, rides, and activities for children, culminating in a fireworks display that lights up the Gargano sky.

Ischitella, a balcony over the Gargano

Nestled on a hill between Lake Varano and the Mediterranean scrub of the Gargano National Park, Ischitella is a village with ancient roots, the birthplace of the poet Pietro Giannone. Attending the Mussel Festival means experiencing an authentic piece of the Gargano summer, in a town that in August becomes a small crossroads of festivals, flavors, and popular Apulian traditions.
