Monte Sant'Angelo's vibrant summer season: faith, music, and nature in the Gargano region
The Monte Sant'Angelo Summer Festival is the grand summer showcase through which the Municipality of Monte Sant'Angelo, in the heart of the Gargano, accompanies residents and visitors throughout the beautiful season. It is not just a single event, but a comprehensive container gathering over one hundred appointments between July and August, ranging from music and theater to cinema, literature, sports, popular traditions, and nature experiences. It is a way to experience Puglia's highest city in a festive atmosphere, amidst its squares, alleys, and iconic landmarks.
The calendar weaves together concerts, theatrical performances, open-air cinema screenings, and entertainment evenings that enliven the historic center. The squares and open spaces become natural stages where local artists and nationally renowned names alternate, in an atmosphere made unique by the white stone backdrop of the Gargano village. Most events are free, making culture accessible to everyone, residents and tourists alike.
At the heart of the festival is the Parole in Cammino literary series, which blends culture and spirituality through a series of author meetings hosted in evocative locations such as the Foresta Umbra, Piazza de Galganis, and the MeTa Museum. Alongside this, there are projects dedicated to children like Nati per Leggere and the artist's book festival Gioielli di Carta, testifying to a rich and diverse cultural offering.
The bond with the Gargano identity is very strong. The festival embraces deeply felt events such as the Tarantella Players Gathering, the International Folklore Gathering, and the CorriMonte foot race, as well as food and wine moments like Bollicine di Puglia and numerous tastings of local products. Also featured is FestambienteSud, a historic event dedicated to the environment and music, now an integral part of the local summer.
The location of Monte Sant'Angelo, overlooking the Gulf of Manfredonia and just a stone's throw from the Foresta Umbra, allows for a program enriched with trekking, cultural night walks, e-bike trails, and spiritual paths, almost always free and upon reservation. It is the perfect opportunity to discover a territory that intertwines sea, mountains, faith, and biodiversity.
Monte Sant'Angelo holds two UNESCO recognitions: the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo, part of the "Longobards in Italy" site, and the ancient primeval beech forests of the Foresta Umbra. The Summer Festival thus becomes an opportunity to traverse this extraordinary heritage, in a continuous dialogue between spirituality, culture, and landscape that makes summer in this Gargano town unique.
For the summer of 2026, the Municipality of Monte Sant'Angelo re-proposes its Summer Festival as part of the tourism promotion campaign "La Porta del Cielo: an emotion to traverse". The program unfolds between July and August with dozens of events spread throughout the historic center and the city's UNESCO sites.
Among the events already scheduled are FestambienteSud (July 24-26), Bollicine di Puglia (July 25), the Tarantella Players Gathering (July 31-August 1), the CorriMonte race (August 1), the International Folklore Gathering (August 6-8), and the Città di Monte Sant'Angelo Slalom (August 29-30). The full details of concerts, shows, and the literary festival will be published by the organization as the events approach.
Monte Sant'Angelo can be reached by car from the A14 motorway (Foggia or Poggio Imperiale exit), continuing towards the Gargano along the SS89. The reference railway station is Foggia, connected to the town by bus lines. The nearest airport is Bari-Palese.
Most Summer Festival events offer free admission. Experiences such as trekking, night walks, and e-bike trails require mandatory booking with local partners. For concerts and shows requiring a ticket, please check the presale information.
The historic center is characterized by stone alleys and steep slopes: comfortable shoes are recommended. In summer, evenings can be cool due to the altitude (about 800m). Do not miss a visit to the Sanctuary of San Michele and the Junno district.
