The rustic dish of the Picentini Mountains celebrated in Bracigliano
The Mallone Festival in Bracigliano, in the province of Salerno, is one of the most cherished gastronomic events of the summer in the Campania hinterland. At the heart of the celebration is mallone (locally known as 'o mallone), a very simple recipe from the Salerno peasant tradition: turnip greens and wild mountain herbs gathered from the surrounding fields, pan-fried with mashed potatoes, chili, and extra virgin olive oil. A dish born of necessity, when the bounty of the garden and forest had to be enough to feed entire families, it has now become a proud identity symbol for the town.
The festival is held in the San Giovanni district, just outside the town center, near the Church of San Giovanni Battista. The stalls and stage are set up in the oratory area on Via San Giovanni Battista, while the surrounding narrow streets fill with long tables, festive lights, and stalls. The setting is typical of Campanian village festivals, with houses nestled against the hillside and the Picentini Mountains providing a scenic backdrop.
The event is historically linked to the celebrations in honor of Saint John the Baptist, the patron saint of the district. The religious aspect, with solemn mass and community gatherings around the church, blends seamlessly with the conviviality of the festival. This is a common tradition in the villages of the Campanian Apennines, where the saint's feast day has always been an occasion for emigrants to return home and families to reunite.
The menu revolves around the star dish, served in various versions, alongside classic Salerno festival fare:
The service is typical of village festivals: you order at the cashier, pick up your food at the counters, and eat at shared outdoor tables.
Each evening is accompanied by live pop music and folkloric performances featuring traditional Campanian groups. Tammurriate, songs, and dances enliven the area until late at night. There is also space for children, with games and entertainment, making the evening suitable for the whole family. Bracigliano, after all, has a long tradition of bands and music that is reflected in its festivals.
Located at an altitude of about 350 meters, the town of Bracigliano is known throughout the province of Salerno for its cherries, its bread, and a lively season of festivals throughout the summer. Its position, halfway between the Irno Valley and the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese, makes it a convenient stop for those wanting to explore inland Campania away from the beaten tourist paths, among trails, chestnut groves, and small rural villages.
The Mallone Festival is a genuinely local event: no commercial spectacle, affordable prices, free entry, and a dish that is rarely found in restaurants. For those traveling in search of authentic local cuisine and festivals still managed by the local community, it is one of the most genuine occasions on the Salerno summer calendar.
The Mallone Festival returned to Bracigliano (Salerno, Campania) from July 12 to 15, 2026, confirming its established summer slot and its usual location in the San Giovanni district, at the oratory of the Church of San Giovanni Battista, on Via San Giovanni Battista.
As per tradition, the event combined the patronal feast with the gastronomic experience. At the center of the stalls was mallone, the peasant preparation based on turnip greens, mountain herbs, potatoes, chili, and olive oil, served in the classic version and with sausage, along with rustic pizzas, fried foods, and local desserts. The evenings were accompanied by live pop music and folkloric performances from the traditional Campanian repertoire.
Access to the festival area was free for all four evenings.
Bracigliano can be reached by car via the A30 Caserta-Salerno motorway (Mercato San Severino exit) or the SS 266 road of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese. It is about 20 km from Salerno and about 40 km from Naples. The festival takes place in the San Giovanni district, on Via San Giovanni Battista, at the oratory of the Church of San Giovanni Battista.
During the evenings, parking areas along the district's streets and in the town center are used. It is advisable to arrive early, as spaces near the festival area fill up quickly.
Entry to the festival area is free. You only pay for what you consume, with the affordable prices typical of village festivals.
Summer evenings in the hills can be cool, so a light sweater is useful. The narrow streets of the district are on a slope, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
