About Raviolo Festival

At the end of August, San Cipriano Picentino transforms Piazza Umberto I into a large open-air dining room for the Raviolo Festival, a celebration of the local raviolo prepared according to recipes passed down through generations. Organized by the Pro Loco, this four-day event features gastronomy, folk music, and conviviality, with a menu that also caters to those with celiac disease or lactose intolerance, all in the heart of the Picentini Mountains in the province of Salerno.

A festival that tells the story of a family dish

In the villages of the Picentini Mountains, ravioli are more than just a first course: they are the dish of Sundays, holidays, and family gatherings. The Raviolo Festival in San Cipriano Picentino, in the province of Salerno, stems from this domestic tradition, bringing it to the public square with recipes that local families have cherished for decades. As the organizing Pro Loco notes, these evenings celebrate the local raviolo as a symbol of the regional culinary heritage.

A comeback after ten years

The festival has a long but interrupted history: after a decade-long hiatus, the event returned in August 2025 for its eleventh edition, coinciding with the fortieth anniversary of the Pro Loco San Cipriano Picentino. The comeback was met with great enthusiasm by locals and neighboring towns, immediately becoming one of the most anticipated events of the late summer in the Picentini area.

Piazza Umberto I, the heart of the festival

Everything takes place in Piazza Umberto I, in the town's historic center. Food stalls occupy the square, while the stage hosts evening performances. It is an authentic village festival format, held outdoors, where people eat at long communal tables and stay late to enjoy the music. The stalls open in the evening, around 8:30 PM, and the festivities continue until late at night.

Folk music in the square

Each evening, a different group enlivens the square with a program that highlights traditional Campanian folk music, tammurriata, and festive repertoire. The 2025 edition featured performances by Paranza Picentina, Sette Bocche, I Picarielli, and the Caffeina Band: four distinct acts blending rural tradition and folk dance, accompanying the four days of the festival.

What to eat

The undisputed star is, of course, the raviolo, offered in several variations. However, the festival menu is extensive and designed to suit all tastes and dietary needs:

  • Picentini ravioli with various sauces, prepared according to local recipes
  • Panini and street food options for those looking for a quick bite
  • Fried snacks and traditional desserts to enjoy while strolling through the stalls
  • Drinks, beer, and local wines from the Picentini area
  • A certified gluten-free menu, created in collaboration with a specialized facility and recognized by the Italian Celiac Association, as well as lactose-free options

San Cipriano Picentino and the Picentini territory

San Cipriano Picentino is a town of just over six thousand inhabitants in the province of Salerno, Campania, nestled on the slopes of the Picentini Mountains, a short distance from the Sele plain and the coast. The municipal area includes the hamlets of Filetta, Campigliano, Pezzano, and Vignale, each with its own traditions and festivals. It is an area of chestnut groves, hazelnut orchards, and small-scale agriculture that fuels a dense calendar of food festivals from June to November.

A very active Pro Loco

The Pro Loco San Cipriano Picentino organizes more than just the Raviolo Festival: its calendar also includes the Chestnut Festival in autumn and the Festival of Festivals of the Picentini, a major event in June that brings together over twenty local associations in Piazza Umberto I, each showcasing their specialty. In that context, the Raviolo Festival is presented as a key stop on the Picentini festival circuit, further promoted by a "Festival Passport" that encourages visitors to collect stamps from event to event.

Why it's worth visiting

Those looking for a genuine village festival, free from tourist filters, will find exactly what they expect: affordable prices, dishes prepared by volunteers, live music, and a square filled with people of all ages. It is also a great starting point for exploring the Salerno hinterland at the end of summer, when the evenings in the hills are cooler than those on the coast.

The Raviolo Festival returns to San Cipriano Picentino from Thursday, August 27 to Sunday, August 30, 2026, once again in Piazza Umberto I and organized by the Pro Loco.
